If you are new to our blog, welcome! Look around and make yourself at home. One thing you’ll notice fairly quickly if you visit the commercial page of our blog, is that we have been Official Photographers at Merlefest every year since 2015. And we love it. We love ALL OF IT.
We love the dynamism, the energy, the chaos, the crowds and fans, and BOY do we love the music. As photographers, we are all over the place during that weekend of bands, vendors and community celebrations. Our task is to capture all of it – not just the various stages where some of the best performances you’ll ever see are taking place. We roam on a schedule and freely and it’s all amazing.
Event photography in the form of weddings is a completely different animal and when we were grabbed hold of by music event photography, it grabbed us hard!
Not all events we shoot are days long and with multiple performers. Grievous Angels is a North Carolina band that Ryan and I love and we’re pals with the members. When they asked for photos of them playing, it was a no brainer. Like Merlefest, we were able to capture the energy and the musicians while enjoying the music. They play at smaller venues like coffee houses and they play to tried and true fans as well as newcomers who find themselves drawn in.
Pixels also covers non-musical events be they community or family. Last year in June, Ryan and I took Finley to Touch-a-Track, an event and fundraiser where we volunteered and captured photos.
If you have an event, musical or otherwise of the non-wedding variety, please contact us. We would love to hear more about it and help you capture and promote it with professional images and good vibes.

We are coming to 2020 feeling hopeful and excited as a family and as a business and in the coming weeks we will share more about our direction and focus. But while we are a family first, we are also a business that is thriving and looking for ways to be strategic.
What are our strengths? Where are our talents? Which projects spark joy, a la Marie Kondo? Businesses that success are not cavalier. They plan and they promote based on their goals.
Entrepreneurs in need of new imagery of themselves, their physical place of business or a digitally native business, we’ve got your back. If you’re an established business in need of updated photography for your collateral, website, upcoming conference, sales event and social media, we’ve got your back. If you are just beginning to start thinking about a tactical promotional strategy for your venture, we’ve got your back. Contact us to discuss what you want to happen in 2020 with your business and where you see commercial photography fitting in. We can help.

The Harrison family – Jamie, Daniel, Henry and Hannah – have been in our lives since 2014. We photographed their wedding in 2015 and watched as their family grew. To say that we adored having them in our studio is an understatement. They were such fun and so easy to be around. It’s amazing to see their kids when I look back at images of them as newlyweds. One minute, you’re capturing a veiled bridal portrait and the next, you’re snuggling their children onto our holiday bench.
In 2017, we captured Hannah’s very first professional portraits. She has only gotten more yummy and cute.
The Scott’s are long time pals of ours too. Parents Julie and Jamie and kids Cameron and Courtney have been in front of our lens several times. I grew up with Julie and her sister Jenny was my best friend in childhood. I’ve known them for such a long time. It fun in between shots to crack up and catch up with their lives.
Now that the kids are growing up, we love seeing them all together for their holiday portraits. Before long, Cameron and Courtney will be off living lives of their own.
We love family portraits whether they are set in the studio, the great outdoors, a specific location like the mountains or high country, or on our property in our outdoor portrait garden. Pixels on Paper photographs, engagements and weddings, brides, and special events and portraits of all kinds in our Wilkesboro, NC studio. We would be honored to meet with you, learn about you and your family and be a part of taking special portraits that will become, we hope, family heirlooms.

Day in the life portraits are where the future belongs for some professional photographers if you ask me. I love these kinds of sessions. We’ll always need formal family and baby portraits, orchestrated weddings and milestone celebrations, but the juice for me these days is found in capturing the every day little moments. I love watching a day unfold around even mundane activities and allowing families to be present in those moments while I do the work of capturing them.
I carry my smart phone with “crazy awesome high end” camera too, but for this particular adventure, I brought what I call my real camera. I’m not throwing shade, ya’ll, but sometimes you need the right tool for the job.
My almost 2 year old loves nothing more than to be outside with his grandmother KeKe (my amazing mom) and if you add tractors, the ability to run and play – this kid is living his best life. On this particular day, when we visited Howard’s Family Farm in Harmony NC, he most definitely was in heaven.
Moms out there will understand how fortunate you feel when you’ve found a group of other Moms who’ll encourage, support, and entertain each other. I am happy to have such a group. We have a bible study together and outings such as this one with our kids. I loved being able to shoot specific images of them with their kids as well.
What do you get when you have a handful of towhead babies and fields of green? A documentary photographer’s dream. This day we had great weather and the cutest subjects.
Together with our kids, we had a hay ride, picked pumpkins from the pumpkin patch, played in a ball pit and the largest sand box Finley has ever seen. They all slid down a combine slide and rode in a cow train. I was able to capture completely candid moments, a whole day of adventure, and all of us doing life together.
My Mom, Finley and myself ended the day by sitting next to a field of Zinnias sharing a picnic lunch of ham sandwiches, tomatoes, goldfish and apple slices. I don’t care if it’s PB&J or salmon en croute, everything tastes better eaten outside.
I have already printed photos of Finley with my Mom that I will treasure as well as photos of Finley just being Finley. That day is already in the history books, but I have proof of it. I have proof of three generations of us exploring, eating and laughing, images that will remind me of what Finley was like just before he turned two, and I have images of our time with friends, that carefree day when our little tribe wandered around together celebrating each other and simple pleasures.

“Roman is ‘pure joy and his smile will light up a room.'” Thus saith the mother of three boys. So either he’s pretty delicious or she has become inured to any type of baby behavior that isn’t precious. I’m guessing that it’s the former.
Traci Pierce admits that her third little man is her most mild-mannered, even keeled, and easiest baby. As the photographer of all her sons’ newborn, 6-month and first birthday portraits, I think it’s safe to say that she may have one of each kind of boy. All different and all yummy little individuals.
Traci went with the all white dress code and theme – a choice that is elegant, much like Traci herself. We kept it simple, fun and easy. What mother of three needs extra tasks? You’re right, sweet reader…. NONE!
Older brothers Holden (4 years) and Sawyer (3 years) had basically the same palette for their photo sessions back in the day. The similarities in their faces is uncanny, so I encourage you to check out those blogs featuring them.
The little video packages we create are such a fun way for parents to share the photos from our session with family, keep for posterity, watch and re-watch, and of course use later as bribes.
Roman: you have a cool name, like your brothers’ names. You are already a classic. And like them, you have a sweet face, and some pretty awesome parents. Go get ’em, young man! We love you.
