David, David, David …….. you were once a boy and I know because I was there. And now, even after a year of pandemic and readjustments, you’re a graduate. What on EARTH?
We were able to capture David Eldridge’s Senior Portraits earlier, where he could show off his All Guy style and love of the outdoors. Finally, after some quarantining, Ryan was able to meet up with this graduate at his former Starmount High School to get great shots of David in his cap and gown. These milestones are so important and when I think about David and his brothers when they were little, I just shake my head that time has run – sprinted! – to this point.
We’ve photographed this family many, many times, including brother Gage’s senior portraits, a family gathering or two, and the earliest years when mom Stacy was wrangling them from all corners of the property. They are the sweetest family.
Congratulations, David! We’re so proud of you!
We love family portraits whether they are set in the studio, the great outdoors, a specific location like the mountains or high country, or on our property in our outdoor portrait garden. Pixels on Paper photographs newborns and families, special events and portraits of all kinds in our Wilkesboro, NC studio. We would be honored to meet with you, learn about you and your family and be a part of taking special portraits that will become, we hope, family heirlooms.

This day felt like a family reunion and I’m so grateful for it. We’ve all had a year of struggles and regrouping with familiar faces and old stories felt so good. Ryan has a history with this wonderful family. He and baby Angelina’s grandma Ann Russo became pals while working together a couple of decades ago. Long after they became friends, Anne’s daughter Jessica was getting married and they thought of Pixels to photograph their wedding. We’ve been friends since. On this day, we took Angelina’s six month portraits with parents Jessica and Bobby and grandparents Ann and Rich Russo at the peach orchards which were gorgeously in bloom.
Angelina was born while we were all in the teeth of the pandemic and mom Jessica worried that she wouldn’t know how to socialize, but this angel has a TON of personality. She’s not shy at all. It was so fun seeing parents and grandparents mixing it up with her. It was such a beautiful day in a warm setting with people we love.
Obviously, with all of this history, this wasn’t the first time we’d photographed these guys. Check out Jessica’s maternity portraits and Angelina’s newborn portraits.

We love Day in the Life portrait sessions and when we are asked to do them, we cannot wait to show the clients what we captured. The natural light, the “true” facial expressions that family members make vs. posed and calcified smiles, and the sense of relaxation, all of these shine through. Throughout the year, we take pictures of our own lives so that we can create memories and gifts. Our own families are given a book for Christmas every year. A few weekends ago I decided to do a little day in the life for us as we handled yard work and play. I thought black and white was ideal for these and am so happy that I suspended what I was doing to capture these moments.
Finley has become deft in the yard, as many of you have noted. He has his own smaller versions of his dad’s tools and loves to help. Ryan will explain the project and goal and this kid digs in! He’s also pretty handy in the kitchen, asking to help us or hanging out and coloring, reading, drawing and making up stories.
With the house and exterior taken care of and some new seeds planted, he was free to race around trying to outrun his shadow. He never succeeded. I love being behind the camera capturing moments instead of providing direction, as I might at a client session.
Interested in a documentary lifestyle photography session this spring or summer? Maybe your family is going to tackle a project outside, play in a local park, or meet other family members outside for a picnic, we’d love to be the documentarians.
Happy Spring, everyone!

There are seasonal campers, hard core orienteering types who are climbing rocks and frozen waterfalls, glampers who want to get out while being conveniently IN, and those who wouldn’t be caught dead in the woods. Most of us just want to get away and, with the spring and summer coming, there are places to retreat that look quite appealing no matter your stripes.
Introducing the upgraded amenities at Lake Norman State Park! Ryan was recently asked to shoot pro images for MBI Builders of this project of theirs. As usual, MBI delivered beautiful work for their clients with solid wood beam construction, and an eye to the end users.
Some details about the project, include:
We love commercial projects and have worked with MBI Builders for years. If you would like to know more about Lake Norman State Park’s new upgrades, check out this link.

The beautiful girl in the pic below is a hyphenate to us.
No she’s not a singer-producer-actress.
She’s a chef-photographer-niece. And she’s FAB.
Jackie was our niece first, of course, and we’ve loved her forever. During her college days, she acted as our assistant for extra large weddings when we needed another pair of great eyes, swift feet and brilliant can-do attitude. Now, this girl-lady-woman is a talented chef in Savannah, Georgia … a town that knows its food.
Just last month, I photographed her small bridal shower in Asheville. We’re all still hip-deep in Covid World, but this event mattered so much to us. The couple expertly created a delicious spread for the party, in-part because food and catering sources are limited/strained, and because these two are so great at what they do. Cookies and cupcakes were custom created by Love & Butter Baking Co to accompany the small bites, luscious sliders, chicken and waffles and more.
Hosted by Jackie’s sister Krystin and a dear friend, the theme was bohemian in both atmosphere and goodie bags. Family members and friends gathered from VA, FL, NC, GA, and while others joined through Facetime from CA and South Africa to shower the bride with love and gifts.
The pair planned to be married in September, but since the country isn’t quite ready to reopen just yet, they have rescheduled their ceremony to May of 2021 and Pixels is definitely looking forward to photographing the occasion at Crest Center & Pavilion in Asheville.
In the meantime, we love you, Jackie. Stay safe and know how loved you are!
