At the end of last year, during the holiday season, Pixels on Paper teamed up with the Wilkes Community Partnership for Children to photograph their “Sugar Plum Fairy Christmas Event.”
For years, I have raved about this organization to anyone who will listen. They do so much for children in our community, and our Finley has reaped the rewards for years.
This event was in held in Wilkesboro and was free and open to all children.
But first, a little bit about the Wilkes County Partnership for Children. This Smart Start program prepares children for school and provides school readiness, child safety, and child development programs to families in our area. This organization also has a diaper pantry, Imagination Library, reading programs, parent support groups and a bevvy of resources that families, teachers and other community members can readily use. I cannot say enough about this org and urge you guys to check them out.
This event brought out the goods! While Finley ran for Mayor (this kid loves to chat up the 2 and 4 legged creatures equally), we captured images of Santa & Mrs. Claus, all of the arts & craft activities, cookie decorating, and time with miniature horses. We forget with all the screens and the speed of info how nice it is to stroll while chatting with neighbors and not feeling in a hurry. This was THAT day, and I loved it.
We love family portraits whether they are set in the studio, the great outdoors, a specific location like the mountains or high country, or on our property in our outdoor portrait garden. Pixels on Paper photographs newborns and families, special events and portraits of all kinds in our Wilkesboro, NC studio. We would be honored to meet with you, learn about you and your family and be a part of taking special portraits that will become, we hope, family heirlooms.

Our holiday portrait sessions took us mostly outside this season, which gave everyone an excuse to wear their seasonal sweaters. The Yorks, whom we’ve known for a good while and photographed many times, were another family that put on their holiday duds and invited Ryan to photograph them at their home.
Mom Lindsay, Dad Mitch, sons Tate and Turner and sweet daughter Tinleigh got to show off the kids’ new tree house – BUILT BY MITCH! – and run around with the newest member of the family, weimaraner pup Allie. It made for an active and fun shoot for everyone.
And these children…. as I write I’m remembering the times before they had Tinleigh and how all three of these kids has grown so quickly. These images are going to be heirlooms we hope, because they capture such a fleeting time. Plus, I love seeing the tartan plaid, the suspenders and bow tie, the snowflakes and missing teeth. It’s all precious to a mama.
The treehouse itself is crazy-impressive, and we can imagine many fun afternoons with those kids exploring and having adventures in it. What was also memorable: the Weimaraner pup. The children are, of course, in the love with her and she let them tickle and snuggle her between and during shots. They are the cutest!!
Other photo and portrait sessions with the Yorks:
Spring in the Orchard
Christmas at Home
Tinleigh’s Newborn Portraits
Outdoor Maternity Portraits
Summer Outdoor Family Portraits
and there are many more of Tinleigh’s first year and large family gatherings. We adore this growing family and appreciate that they call on us to document their lives through the seasons and the milestones.
Merry Christmas, Yorks! Cheers to 2022!

Our Christmas portrait sessions this season have been wonderful. Ryan had the pleasure of photographing the Andrews family this year. We love the Wilkesboro’s Christmas decorations and visit them as a family many times during the season. They are a perfect place to get photos.
Mom Kristen, Dad Matthew, and sons Luke and Jackson met up with Ryan and they wandered around capturing some great shots. Kids love playing in and around the lights – we know our son does, and the Andrews boys do too. It was a perfect location for their photos.
We’ve photographed this lovely family more than a few times. We photographed Jaxon’s newborn session, his six-month portraits, and one year portraits, as well as an At Home Christmas session. Watching their boys grow up is a reminder to enjoy every moment with our family. Tis the season, afterall.
Taylor and Matthew were married in October of this year at the Hallelujah Arena in Morganton, North Carolina and it was a family affair, planned from a distance and during a pandemic. Matthew is Ryan’s second-cousin, is in the military stationed in Wisconsin, and Taylor is working on her graduate degree at Appalachian State University in Boone. Even at a distance, and while Taylor was studying, these two were efficient and thorough in their planning.
There was a large wedding party, with folks coming from all over, but these two trusted us – and our many years of experience – on the day and leading up to it. Even the last minute decision to have a “first touch” was easy for us to pull off, and the day was truly a blast. Outdoor weddings, especially in beautiful spots like this one, allow for a variety of textures and people groups, so we took full advantage.
This was a new venue for us and we loved it. There was a beautiful covered pavilion, and the outdoor ceremony site showcased a mountain view. A classic car was provided by the venue and coordinators provided golf cart shuttles across the property. There was also a large fire pit which provided a quieter space for guests throughout the night.
A few months prior to the wedding Taylor sent me a Facebook video of bubble machine guns that she thought would be fun. Wanting my input on how they could be used, she made the purchase and together we planned her bubble entrance. With the help of two bridesmaids it was hilarious. They gave it another go during the couple’s first dance and there were bubbles everywhere!
During the reception, Matthew shared a dance with his Mom Melanie. They were both laughing and really enjoying themselves. When I mentioned this to Melanie later in the night, she said that of her four kids Matthew had always been her dance partner since he was young, and it was something that felt natural to the both of them.
Our son Finley attended the wedding, because that kid loves to dance, too. While we worked, he hung around with family and spent most of the night on the dance floor, even stealing dances with the bride.
What a night! Glow sticks made for a fun mess-free exit, and we were so happy to have been able to be not just the photographers for this event, but guests. Congratulations Taylor and Matthew!

The leaves are rapidly changing and families are pulling out their sweaters, boots, scarves and hats and engaging us for fall family photos. It’s a gorgeous time of year and with the holidays upon us soon, you can be sure that it’s time to create wall portraits, photo holiday cards, calendars and gifts. It’s also ALWAYS a good time to capture memories.
If you’re in the area or from the area, contact us for ideas and scheduling fall photos in the North Carolina Mountains.
