We don’t preach politics from this blog. We don’t preach, period. Our core values, we hope, show up in our work and the way we live our lives. Even if we weren’t parents, the loss of the lives of children is a heartbreak like no other. I cannot imagine racing to a schoolyard with Ryan to wait to see if our kid emerged from a building…. if Finley James would appear on a list later to be read at a memorial. And I’ll just stop there. Our prayers have been sent to Florida since we heard the news last week and my mind wanders the way a new mother’s does when kids make the headlines…
We want, with this particular blog post, to celebrate children. They will forge and become the true 21st century and what community feels like. They may wriggle around, or show shyness, diffidence, disinterest, be squirrelly, silly or just distracted during portrait sessions, but WE LOVE taking photos of children – of all ages. [Our apologies to the teens in this blog who are cringing at the “children” header.]
Here are some favorites from over the years that spring to mind.
One of the greatest joys really is watching from behind the lens as kids navigate all phases of life. I look at each of these faces and can remember the photo session, but also the child/kid/baby/graduating senior and how she or he was that day. I especially love knowing that I’ll see some of them again … older, wiser, goofier, figuring whatever of life’s puzzles is in their lap that day.
God’s gift of Finley to us has heightened this for me as a photographer. Any of those kids could be Finley and all of these kids could have been in that school in Florida. They’re all precious. They all deserve our love and care and it’s a distinct pleasure to be the one to make sure their families have portraits of them to remember each precious moment.
We love family portraits whether they are set in the studio, the great outdoors, a specific location like the mountains or high country, or on our property in our outdoor portrait garden. Pixels on Paper photographs, engagements and weddings, brides, and special events and portraits of all kinds in our Wilkesboro, NC studio. We would be honored to meet with you, learn about you and your family and be a part of taking special portraits that will become, we hope, family heirlooms.

We are dog lovers. We love animals. Our dog Chelsea and cat Sulley were our children before Master Finley hit the planet and they are now his siblings, Chelsea in particular is minder and sellout fan. She’s done. She met him, signed the papers and they are bonded for keeps.
You don’t have to tell us about loving pets, peeps. We soooooooooooooo get it and we relate to clients who want their beloved animals included in holiday cards, engagement portraits, kid and family photos, as part of celebrating rescue centers and pet adoptions. Why leave them out? They are there – day in and day out – in our lives, during meals, giving love, making requests with their voices and paws, comforting us and “doing life” with us. We say: INCLUDE YOUR PETS and we also take portraits just of them, should you want to have a great memory captured for posterity. If it matters to you, it matters to us, you know?
So here’s to our fur babies!
“Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.” – Anatole France“If I could be half the person my dog is, I’d be twice the human I am.” – Charles Yu
“I’m suspicious of people who don’t like dogs. But I trust a dog when it doesn’t like a person.” – Ron Burgundy
“Happiness is a warm puppy.” – Charles Schulz
“When I look into the eyes of an animal I do not see an animal. I see a living being. I see a friend. I feel a soul.” – A.D. Williams
“Whoever said that diamonds are a girl’s best friend…never owned a dog.” – Author Unknown
“We have more to learn from animals than animals have to learn from us.” – Anthony Douglas Williams“You can easily judge the character of a man by how he treats those who can do nothing for him.” – James D. Miles“Our perfect companions never have fewer than four feet.” – Colette
“Surround your children with animals, for they are the teachers with purity of heart.” – Anonymous

We are all about capturing memories and creating heirlooms. We say it at the end of every blog. And now that we are parents of a 3 month old, we’re relishing the moments with clients and their Smalls as they check off milestones.
One of our favorites is the One Year Cake Smash portraits where the babes are dressed up to get dirty and their personalities really come out.
Or not. Some are just excited or curious about the sweets provided, but regardless, the outcome is always adorable.
Each child is individual and special, so each cake smash is too. We help decorate based on mood, time of year and fun specifications we discuss with parents. More often than not, we already know the couple because we’ve photographed their engagement, wedding, maternity and newborn photos. Don’t worry though if you’ve never hired us or even heard of cake smash birthday portraits for your children!! We’d LOVE to meet you, discuss your kiddo and ideas and help you capture an important first birthday baby milestone. Just be in touch and we’ll start turning the creative wheels.

Some of you engaged ladies out there have begun looking for the gown of your dreams, your bridesmaids’ dresses and so on, and you’ve scoured websites and magazines for inspiration. Without telling you to table your search (because who are we to tell people what to do ….. unless we’re taking photos and even then, we ask nicely), we urge you to come by the Pixels on Paper booth/table at this upcoming event: The Wilkes Wedding Expo. It’s an important event to add to your research.
We’ve been attending this expo for the last several years, and it is easily one of the best ways for vendors from all parts of the wedding service industry to showcase their business to prospects. Ryan and I have met couples we’re still friends with over the years after taking bridal, engagement and ultimately wedding photos of them. (You sort of know immediately when it’s a good fit). Many of these same couples have started families, so we’ve also captured their newborns, 1st birthdays and following photos over the years AND those of their siblings. This expo is where you get great information and where many lasting relationships are born.
This year’s expo, hosted again by Bridal Traditions Wedding & Prom Attire is Sunday, March 11th at the John A. Walker Center at Wilkes Community College from 1 – 4 pm. Don’t miss the opportunity to get some great info and have fun with your support team.
We look forward to meeting you there!
