2019 highlights

If this is our 2019 Year in Review, then little Riley above has perfectly summed up how we felt at the end of the year. Contented and tired! We did it! I wanted to share the visual breadth and depth of what our year looked like, but that would be volumes… volumes of images, stories, back-stories, comedy segments, prayers and all of the rewards that come with this gig. It’s a full life.

So instead: enjoy some of the highlights. There are plenty more, but here’s a sampling of people and places we had in our lens last year!

Above: on the commercial side – we took headshots for Krusch Divorce Resolution – a wonderful firm out of Charlotte. The cozy plaid, attic bedroom was captured to promote a real estate project from Kathryn Lily of Kathryn Lily Interiors in Cornelius.

Below: Spring in the orchard, included prom portraits, the Overby family’s return to the orchard, baby Ava checking herself out in a mirror, the expecting Orozco family of 3 about-to-be-4, and finally little Miss Paisley in a fabulous tulle skirt. The blooms and trees provided the backdrop, but the people made the experience and results perfect.

Late spring, early summer is the mix we always hope it will be.
Below: senior portraits (gorgeous McKenzie on the left), several delicious babies, kids and pets, some commercial work for the Wilkesboro Town Council and, of course, Merlefest!!

Above: more commercial photo sessions for MBI Builders, Wilkes Community College’s new Culinary Building, architectural exteriors and real estate projects, the chef and owner of the elegant Craft Bistro in West Jefferson, and a special trip to the Touch-a-Truck event.

Below: more prom images of high school besties dressed “to the nines,” and the full-on summer portraits of families with new babies, those expecting babies, family reunions at mountain homes, and a couple getting married at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh.

And finally, a round-up of faces we’ve known and watch grow for years, some very, very new faces, a celebration of high school and college grads and a destination wedding at The Biltmore Estate.

It seems fitting to start and end with babies. They are our symbols of hope, our reminder that life keeps moving no matter what and, let’s face it, they are cute as heck. Again, we want to thank the families and businesses we worked with last year. What a blast and a privilege and your commitment to working with professional does not go unnoticed. We’re looking forward to seeing all the highlights that 2020 is going to bring.

Newborn Baby Portraits – Anna Sophia

Pixels On Paper Photography Anna Sophia Newborn Baby Portrait Photo

This perfectly pink bundle is Anna Sophia. She’s the second born of our dear clients Ashley and Oscar and we go way back with them. We photographed their engagement and wedding portraits, as well as the newborn portraits of their first born baby boy – Leo – who is so stinking cute it hurts.

An April Baby ~ Leo Orozco

We also met them in our favorite orchard to get springtime family portraits and to announce that mom Ashley was pregnant with baby number two.

Miss Anna Sophia finally arrived and she is – according to her mom – already an easier baby. She was easier to carry during pregnancy, easier to deliver, and now compared to her brother, she is easier to get to eat and sleep. Let’s just say she has loads of chill.

We’re not knocking little Leo, though. During this newborn portrait session with his new little sister, he was very concerned and Ashley caught a great shot of him watching to make sure that all was well.

“I’m watching you, Misty!!” [photo credit: Ashley Orozco]

On a couple of occasions, if baby Anna began to cry, Leo would run to her side to pet her and make sure that she was ok. I love that instinct in kids. Sometimes they just ooze empathy. Sometimes they bang each other on the head with metal toys …… but this is not that blog.

She’s plump and pretty and even grinned in her sleep and we are dying to get more images of her, her brother and this family in the coming months and years. Because Oscar and Ashley are wedding clients, they were able to take advantage of our free baby session and we hope they will make capturing milestone portraits a priority. All the families who have taken advantage of this continue to thank us over the years.

For now – g’nite little princess. We love you!

Newborn baby portraits of Master Roman Pierce

Roman Pierce Newborn Photography by Pixels On Paper Portrait Photo

Boy number 3.

The Pierce family have welcomed their newest child, another son. No, his name is not Archie Harrison Mountbatten Windsor – as cute and succinct as that is. And Congrats to Meghan and Harry Windsor and so on and so forth, but this little brunette with the serious face is Roman Pierce. No offense, but he rivals any kid I’ve seen recently. Just look at him. It’s hard to interpret the expression. Maybe he knows that two older brothers await him – Holden and Sawyer. They seem sweet, but maybe Roman knows innately that wrestling and clobbering and dog piles are in his future. Lay low, dude. It will find you eventually.

Roman was born on March 7th, and after a short minute at the hospital, he visited our portrait studio for his first photographs. He was an angel, perfectly comfortable in any pose, prop and backdrop. I recalled his oldest brother Holden dressed in gear that remembered their dad’s flight gear.

Napping Holden………… the snoozing Red Baron.

Mom Traci is a pharmacist and she provided the wooden mortar and pestle we used for Roman’s session. It made a perfect spot for him to grab some zzzzzzs. I love his facial expression in the left image. “Who are you?” “And any chance you could score a Coke Zero for me? I’m having a hard time staying awake.”

We’ll be photographing sweet Roman for his first year, including 6 month portraits and his first birthday. We cannot wait to see him grow a bit and watch him with his brothers. For now……….. ssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Would you like to know more about getting ready for baby portraits? Here’s a start.

What to Expect during a newborn photoshoot – we’ve got you covered

For those who missed it the first time, it’s important to repost if you have a newbie at home: How to Prepare and What Really Happens during a newborn portrait session. So, what really happens during newborn photo sessions?
Well, for starters, the sessions don’t flow from pose to pose and set to set, as I’m sure you’ve already imagined. We’re dealing with fresh little beings who have been breathing on their own for only about 10 days. They don’t know about lighting, where to look or to remain still, because they are little tubes. Breast milk or formula goes in and poop comes out. In the middle they stare, cry and sleep.

A newborn session can take up to four hours. During that span, our camera is not up with the shutter clicking away, because, as mentioned, newborns babies are entirely unpredictable. We never know when or how often they will cry, sleep, eat or need a diaper change and all those things tend to take the most amount of time during our session. A fraction of the 4 hours is spent capturing images, but don’t worry, we tend to get the magic because we know what to look for and when to seize a moment.

Here’s a little guide that helps moms who are breastfeeding and planning the photo shoot day.

Here are a few tips and suggestions that I email our clients prior to the session:
  • Give your baby a bath and lather him or her in lotion and bring the lotion with you. This will help condition any peeling skin.
  • Keep your baby awake before the session if possible. We know this can often be tricky during the car ride, but do your best.
  • We want you to bring us a hungry baby! When you arrive he/she will be ready for food and a nap. Those sleeping angels make the best portraits. Try not to feed for a few hours before arrival. Feeding when you arrive at the studio will ensure that he/she will drift off to sleep and be most cooperative to being posed and photographed.
  • If you are nursing, there is a list of foods that we recommend you avoid for 48 hours before your session that will help keep your baby from being gassy or fussy during the session.

Read the entire blog and be in touch! We understand what it takes from behind the camera and in front of it! We’ve got your back.

baby, baby, baby ~ professional portraits of those first, sweetest moments

“The Angel that presided o’er my birth
Said, ‘Little creature, form’d of Joy and Mirth
‘Go love without the help of any Thing on Earth.'” – William Blake

Baby, baby, babies. They are awesome, and noisy, and smell great, and then stink up a diaper. They can make you feel like you won the lottery and make you want to yank your hair out – in between naps – and feedings and trying to find your way back to normal with a new human around. There are so many important milestones in a life, but the entry of a new person is one of the biggest. We always encourage new parents to consider getting portraits made of their newborns. We know you’re tired and we know there is some effort involved, but here are some things to think about:

  1. We’re good at it. We’ve been doing this for well over a decade (nearly 2) and we have the props, places to nurse in private, a changing room…. we’re ready for you.
  2. You’ll never be able to capture these moments from the first 10 days again. When they are over, they’re over. There will be other moments, but not during these first, fresh, tender few days.
  3. You’re tired and need a hug. Let us get Little Miss or Little Mister photographed while you rest, even for a moment. If you need to feed, no problem. If you need to change him or her, no worries. If you need that hug and an understanding nod, we have those in spades. You’re not alone. We can make it fun.

“When you were born, beloved, was your soul
New made by God to match your body’s flower,
And were they both at one same percious hour
Sent forth from heaven as a perfect whole?
Or had your soul since dim creation burned,
A star in some still region of the sky,
That leaping earthward, left its place on high
And to your little new-born body yearned?
No words can tell in what celestial hour
God made your soul and gave it mortal birth,
Nor in the disarray of all the stars
Is any place so sweet that such a flower
Might linger there until thro’ heaven’s bars,
It heard God’s voice that bade it down to earth.” – Sara Teasdale

These little miracles will be smashing their first birthday cakes after a single trip around the sun. Then they’ll walk, if they aren’t already and talk, and start reading and you’ll find them upside down in a hamper or wanting to jump off the front porch barefooted or flushing something valuable down the throne…… and suddenly, it’s their first day of kindergarten and then senior prom.

Do yourself a favor if you are expecting and think about newborn portraits and photo shoots for your soon-to-be-born baby. If you hired Pixels for your engagement and wedding portraits, then you may have already chosen to have us capture newborn photos when the time comes. We do have a package that many of our clients have taken advantage of. Regardless, you’ll love these images. We’ve designed walls around children and family portraits and would love to do the same for you.

See this little princess wrapped in pink below? That’s Berklee. Just below her image is a recent one of her, now nearly 3 years old, with her new brother Wyatt. Pretty sweet, huh?
