Small business love up: Anchor Coffee

Some day, perhaps, this bundle will pop into Anchor for “a cuppa.” For now, he’s a cute side-car at a place we adore.

As we celebrate small businesses during this government and socially sanctioned downtime, I would be remiss if I didn’t shine a light on Anchor Coffee. It’s a place we love filled with people we love.

Our family goes to church with owner Greg Brady and his family and we photographed them during their child’s dedication. It was a precious moment and we were honored to do it.

Anchor is a shop that we visit often for coffee or a beer and they have live music, too. Boy are we missing them during this quarantine time.

Like all businesses in the community, they’re serving as much as they can to stay in business and continuing to be enormous sources of love and light when we need it most.

Are there businesses that you love and miss? If you can, consider buying a gift certificate, ordering curbside or just calling to tell them “we miss you!!” God Bless Anchor and those we get to worship with, pray for and do life with. I hope you will support and follow Anchor Coffee if you’re a Wilkesboro local.

Small Business Love: Waggles Pet Supply

Pixels, like the rest of you fine folks, is quarantined and trying to remain patient, grateful, humbled and empathetic. We’re taking this thing seriously and that recently has taken the form of redoing one of the bathrooms in our house. More on that later…

We thought it would be appropriate, since we are a small business, to highlight some of the small businesses in our area that we love and support, with the hope that you will too. I’m starting with Waggles Pet Supply! Oh how we love these people.

Pixels on Paper 2015 Pet Food Fundraiser with Christmas portraits for Waggles photos

We partnered with Waggles a few years back, and with the help of generous locals, were able to provide 560 lbs of pet food to the Wilkes Animal Shelter. We offered free pet portrait sessions to clients who donated a minimum 15 pound bag of dry pet food to the shelter, and during the two-day event, locals and clients from as far away as Charlotte, N.C., participated.

Pixels has also photographed owner Kim Hatfield and her family (Terri, Rayne, and Journey) for personal portraits on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Kim is a close friend of ours and we get all of our sweet dog Chelsea’s supplies from her and it’s her where she gets a bath. We were the very first to take advantage of her curb service during quarantine.

We hope you’ll go to their website and follow them on social media and support them with purchases for your fur babies. We have to take care of each other during this time! Wash your hands everyone and stay safe. We love you.

Eldridge & Wood Family Portraits

We could also call this blog: In the land of men, because there are seven of them in this blended family of eight. Seven men, and one of them is now in the U.S. Navy. This particular photo session was special. We’ve known the Eldridge side for a lonnnnnng while. Stacy Eldridge – mom of FIVE – has been contacting us for portrait sessions since 2010. It seems like a lifetime ago since we photographed her boys leaning against a rusted out pickup truck in their matching white polos.

Now Stacy’s land of men has grown by two more. Her partner Michael Wood and his son Rusty have joined the family. Rusty was set to leave to begin his service in the U.S. Navy so we had to do everything it took to make this photo shoot happen. It was our pleasure of course. We love supporting our service members in any way possible and wanted to get to know him and his dad, Michael a bit better.

The Eldridges are already all over the place with five young men running in different directions and Stacy routinely has a house full of other kids, friends of her boys, neighbors, etc. I frankly don’t know how this full time nurse and mom manages it all. Having everyone in one spot, even for just part of a day, was a big deal.

For this shoot – we ordered up a sunny day – but were dealt a rainy and cold hand. Many thanks to Winding Creek Wedding Venue and Farm – a place we love – for allowing us to meet up for this session. Ultimately, it was the perfect spot for these rugged men, in various stages of growing up, finding themselves, discovering their styles and attitudes for group and individual shots. No two are alike, you know? And isn’t that what makes each family unique? The mix of everyone.

See more of the Eldridge boys from 2010 and 2014, where you can not only see the growth and change, but see why parents hire us for milestones and every couple of years to mark the lives of their kids and family.

the love of parents – portraits of grace in the 21st century

Arnold family outdoor spring peach orchard photos by Pixels On Paper Portrait Photographers photoHow’s that for a grand title? Parenting has been on my mind for a minute: certainly years ago when I realized the sacrifices of my own parents, and absolutely again when becoming a parent myself with Ryan, my partner in all things.

Parenting is a full library. It contains every journal about how to do it, parenting magazines showing it in all its shades, every map of potential adventures with a child, every poem or bit of wisdom from the Kahlil Gibrans, and every scrapbook showcasing the memories of parenting. I imagine rows of volumes about life with a child – in good times and bad, on bikes, on camping trips, in boredom, during downtime, at holidays, recitals, studying, first days of school, and all the random but well-captured calamity that “just happens.” The layers of thought, work, imagination, terror and self-analysis that go into the concept of genetically forming a child and then physically raising that child, while trying to impart and protect them are frankly endless and would fill shelves – and do.

But honestly, especially these days of division and acrimony on cable news 24/7, what is most valuable to me as a new mom of a nearly one year old are the examples and illustrations of parenting with LOVE. I read and seek counsel, believe me – from the doctors and psychologists and from the Bible, but when I have nothing left to metabolize mentally, I return to simply providing love for Finley and looking to my friends, and clients, for proof of it. It’s not over-intellectualized or over-wrought, it’s easy and natural and primal and perfect.

Seeing that love through my lens is restoring me, ya’ll. Thought I’d share.

Listening. Spending time. Including them in preparing for the new baby. Picnics and time together. We’re photographing memories, but we’re also watching our friends and clients be “show up” parents. We’re watching them be present.

Parenting through showing others how to care for the least among us, including adoption dogs.

Parenting through some friendly competition.

And being the protective parents during some much needed downtime.

Anya Parry Newborn Portrait Photography photoOur time with these families gave us some insight into what we might expect with Finley, and looking back at some of the photos I’m reminded about what matters most: sticking together and showing love and grace. Starting at home.

Vendors We Love – Part 1

We hope that right now, you’re out relishing a day off. No one should labor too hard on Labor Day. This long weekend is one of the last siren calls of summer. School is back in session and people are back to a structured schedule of work and perhaps longing for the next thing to look forward to.
For us, it means harvesting items from our garden, chasing our son around who’s threatening daily to walk right out the door and thinking about our clients – old and new – and our vendors. We love the vendors we have the privilege of working with and thought that we’d share a few of them with you. These come highly recommended and not just by Ryan and myself.
Leatherwood Mountain Resort is a pretty spectacular spot for weddings and we’ve photographed our fair share in this amazing location. For more views, and instances of our work at Leatherwood, take a look.
Pixels On Paper Photograhphy High Country NC wedding photographers Leatherwood mountain resort wedding photoFrom the country to the city and that takes us to a pretty glam spot – Holiday Inn Center City Charlotte. If you want a wedding where there is plenty to do over the weekend and a diverse crowd or wedding party who want lots of options for dining and activities, Charlotte, NC is hard to beat. The skyline views also make this Holiday Inn perfect for photos – engagement, bridal or otherwise.

And for the Part 1 finale on vendors (don’t worry, there’s another blog to come), we have to mention Bridal Traditions Wedding & Prom Attire which is located near us in North Wilkesboro. We are friends-like-family with Kelly at BT, and have collaborated with her and her team more times than we can count. Gorgeous gowns, tux options, gifts, and ideas pour out of their doors.

That little number in the gown above just happens to be Kelly, the owner of Bridal Traditions’. She knows what she’s doing.
We love making suggestions, when asked, so if you’re planning your wedding in North Carolina and would like to know more about the vendors we think of highly, please reach out. Vendor Love Part 2 comes soon!
