Little, personalized touches are often what makes one wedding different than all others and our advice to each couple we photograph is to find ways to make their wedding day personalized. Some couples pick 2-3 specific items to focus on – succulents and a nod to a shared love of cycling for example (see below) – or a love of Dr. Who and their college school colors. But whether it’s some trinket added to the bride’s bouquet, or a lines from a poem painted and featured around the reception hall, incorporating those special items of significance throughout the décor, food and flowers can make an event memorable.
One of the neat things about us even though we’re on year 14 of photographing weddings together is that our perspectives are totally different. Ryan absolutely loves the small details and he loves to photograph them. No matter how hard I try, his are always better. He just has a knack for it.
We love to see when a couple’s personalities are incorporated into wedding details and decor, even if it’s just subtle hints. Sometimes a lot of time, effort and creativity go into making these details and we certainly want to be sure that they’re photographed uniquely. Favorite books, family heirlooms, inside jokes, modern takes on wedding toppers, it’s all as specific as each couple is different.
We love family portraits whether they are set in the studio, the great outdoors, a specific location like the mountains or high country, or on our property in our outdoor portrait garden. Pixels on Paper photographs, engagements and weddings, brides, and special events and portraits of all kinds in our Wilkesboro, NC studio. We would be honored to meet with you, learn about you and your family and be a part of taking special portraits that will become, we hope, family heirlooms.

There’s a great moment in the movie “When Harry Met Sally” – no not THAT ONE – when Harry introduces Sally to his friend hoping Sally will like him and Sally introduces Harry to her friend in the hopes that she and Harry will hit it off. They do NOT. Their friends, however, fall in love with each other instead and pretty quickly know that they are perfect for each other. This leaves Harry with Sally,… as it was meant to be and let’s all raise a glass to the late, great Nora Ephron for being a genius of insight, humor and writing.
But I digress. Our story is about Whitney and Preston, who met through friends in a similar situation and found out that in fact they were the ones who were supposed to be together. They too fell in love, dated for 5 years and will be married in just under 3 months. These engagement portraits were the first real photos they have of themselves as a couple outside of cell phone photos.
Their love for each other is evident in their body language, laughter and ability to listen to and really see one another. Always a good sign and so fun to watch. The lyrics from one of “their songs” – My Best Friend by Tim McGraw – describe them perfectly.
“Oh we just get closer – I fall in love all over – Every time I look at you…
And I don’t know where I’d be – Without you here with me – Life with you makes perfect sense – You’re my best friend.”
These two are serious about the foundation of their relationship – a combination of friendship, lots of laughter, commitment and a very strong faith in God. They’ve made plans to incorporate traditional vows into their late summer ceremony and have also added braiding the God’s Knot into the day. For the uninitiated, the God’s Knot is made up of 3 strands of cord: one for God, one for the bride, and one for the groom. During the ceremony, holding the cords as a couple, Whitney and Preston we will braid them and as they are being braided the pastor will read a piece of scripture that describes each strand. They told us that, “God is the biggest factor in both of our lives and we know that as long as we have our faith in God, He will make our marriage and lives together as success and full of love as He sees fit.”
As we prepare to capture their wedding, we asked them for some thoughts about anticipating both the day and their future. “Our wedding day will be the one day in our lives that all the people we love, both family and friends, will be there to help us celebrate such a special time. We are also very excited about all the photos that will be taken! Pictures serve as memories and this is one moment we never want to forget!”
[A quick interjection/aside here]: People talk about the importance of making memories through photos all the time. It really does take an occasion – like a wedding – to show you how fleeting those moments and those days are and how grateful you are that someone documented your joy, your youth, your hope and your character in that particular moment in time.]
Pixels: What do you want to tell your families?
Whitney and Preston: “We want our families to know that without them our relationship wouldn’t be as strong and successful as it is. Both sets of our parents have shown us what lasting relationships need and how they should be.”
We have every confidence that these two will work to make their relationship last, surrounded by the support of family and friends (it matters, folks!! you need your tribe around you) and grounded in a strong relationship with God. They are looking forward to the next chapter in their adventure and to starting a family in the next few years.
We LOVE you guys, Whitney and Preston and wish you only more fun, more cracking each other up, more quiet time at home listening to tunes and watching favorite movies and only the best as you build a full – a TRULY full – life together.
From the moment we first met Ashley and Phil in Charlotte, NC to discuss their wedding photography, we knew their wedding day was going to be a fun day. Not only did they pick one of our favorite venues, the Holiday Inn Center City, but they were also open to whatever creative ideas we came up with for their wedding photos.
From the moment the photos started with Ashley and her bridesmaids, through photos with Phil and his guys, the day just seemed to click. The Holiday Inn offers so many opportunities for great photos, the rooftop is one of our favorites, and was the perfect opportunity for Phil and Ashley to have a moment together, just them (and us of course…) before the day went into high gear.
The ceremony, held on the rooftop rotunda and lead by Reverend Patrick Malloy, went as smooth as you could ask for with nearly perfect weather. Following the ceremony and the family portraits at the ceremony site, we headed into the streets of uptown with the entire bridal party to photograph more wedding pictures.
On the Holiday Inn’s rooftop rotunda, the wedding ceremony site was transformed into the wedding reception site and the sounds from Split Second Sound DJ Derek pumped through the party. Introductions of the Bride and Groom lead straight into their first dance and then into cake smashing. Yes, it’s the moment all wedding guests egg-on, but only occasionally happens. In the end, even with wedding cake icing in the Bride’s eye, the party went on long into the night. Wedding guests enjoyed the opportunity to step into the photo booth from ShutterBooth Charlotte to capture their memories while creating a guestbook for Ashley and Phil. One final serenade of “Take Me Home, Country Roads” by John Denver ended the night as wedding guests joined together on the dance floor to send-off Ashley and Phil into newlywed bliss.
Congratulations, and a huge thank you to Ashley and Phil for the amazing wedding day!

We’ve worked in the Charlotte wedding industry with Rachel for many years. When it was her turn to be married and she asked Pixels On Paper to be her and Jeremy’s wedding photographer for their Charlotte wedding we were thrilled and honored that she would choose us. This wedding was one of the most emotionally touching and enthusiastic weddings we’ve photographed.
Rachel and Jeremy’s story is unique in that their love did not only involve each other but also Rachel’s daughter Sophia. A short time after Rachel gave birth to Sophia, Rachel was encouraged by her sister to get back into the dating world. Through EHarmony she met Jeremy. We all know a lot of guys that would freak out at this situation and after the first date never be heard from again. Jeremy is not one of those guys. They got to know each other for about a week, went on one date and cancelled their E-harmony memberships! Sophia joined them for their second date and it was obvious that they were meant to become an incredible little family.
Photographing this wedding was easy. In part because Rachel was the wedding planner for the Holiday Inn Center City Charlotte. Lets face it, she had thought of everything and was crazy organized! The main reason it was easy to be their wedding photographer was because the whole day in Charlotte was full of emotion, energy, details and LOVE. We think that even if you don’t personally know this couple you will surely feel the moments we captured in their wedding pictures.
Rachel and Jeremy chose to share a First Look before the wedding ceremony so that they could have a private moment before their wedding and also get as many photographs taken so that they could go to their wedding reception and start celebrating with their wedding guests sooner. We loved photographing this moment between the two of them discreetly from a distance.
The wedding ceremony was located on the roof top rotunda of the Holiday Inn Center City Charlotte. Sophia seemed to be celebrating during the ceremony just as much as Rachel and Jeremy. During their vows Jeremy also made a commitment to Sophia and gave her a necklace during the ceremony as a sign of his love to her.
We captured wedding pictures of the couple and their wedding party in and around the Holiday Inn Center City Charlotte, at one of the new center city parks in uptown Charlotte, and along the tracks of the Charlotte Lynx Light Rail which they used as transportation to the wedding reception.
The wedding reception was located just outside of uptown Charlotte at Byron’s Southend. The Michael Catlow Group provided DJ entertainment that had the wedding party and guests celebrating on the dance floor all night.
We wish Rachel, Jeremy and Sophia all the very best that life and marriage has to offer. Remember, our blog loves comments!
