This wedding was one we’d been looking forward to, and even with the COVID delay, it was worth the wait. What a party for a pretty fabulous couple. Jackie is our niece, and her wedding was scheduled for last fall, but the pandemic caused them to shift their plans. Her beloved now husband Kevin has family in South Africa and they wanted them in attendance. We had as many as could travel and the rest of the clan showed up to support them both. We were the photographers and our son Finley was the ring-bearer and center of the dance party during the reception. More on that in a bit.
Jackie’s sister Krystin was by her side for the duration, and occasionally ours, helping. God Bless the helpers, and Krystin has stars in her crown. WE LOVE YOU, KRYSTIN! Not only was she ever present and effervescent, her toast during the reception brought the house down. All the disparate parts of each family came together for the day, and it was so tear-jerkingly beautiful.
The couple had a first look prior to the ceremony that was so sweet. Not all couples want to do a first look, but I’m glad that Jackie and Kevin chose to. The Crest Center and Pavilion holds lots of spots for capturing great images and with the weather and views, we took full advantage.
The Fairy Flower girl and her happy companion….
One of the special moments during the wedding ceremony was a planting to connect older generations of family with new beginnings. Jackie’s grandmother’s Christmas cactus was sectioned and given out to her grandchildren. Jackie and Kevin replanted theirs as part of their ceremony.
There were several hilarious and memorable moments for the couple during the reception. One was the cutting of the cake, when Kevin spilled part of a slice down Jackie’s dress. Another was when father and son-in-law danced together. Jackie referred to it as the Daddy-Kevin dance. It was hysterical. Our own son, Finley danced all night until finally a member of our team scooped him up and put his “ride or die” little body down for the night.
The rest of the reception and evening was a PAR-TAY. Guests spilled out from the dance floor to enjoy the sunset and celebrate. As tired as everyone was, Ryan and I were thrilled to be tapped to photograph this wedding.
We love Jackie and Kevin and wish them 10 decades of marital bliss.
We love family portraits whether they are set in the studio, the great outdoors, a specific location like the mountains or high country, or on our property in our outdoor portrait garden. Pixels on Paper photographs newborns and families, special events and portraits of all kinds in our Wilkesboro, NC studio. We would be honored to meet with you, learn about you and your family and be a part of taking special portraits that will become, we hope, family heirlooms.

Some of you engaged ladies out there have begun looking for the gown of your dreams, your bridesmaids’ dresses and so on, and you’ve scoured websites and magazines for inspiration. Without telling you to table your search (because who are we to tell people what to do ….. unless we’re taking photos and even then, we ask nicely), we urge you to come by the Pixels on Paper booth/table at this upcoming event: The Wilkes Wedding Expo. It’s an important event to add to your research.
We’ve been attending this expo for the last several years, and it is easily one of the best ways for vendors from all parts of the wedding service industry to showcase their business to prospects. Ryan and I have met couples we’re still friends with over the years after taking bridal, engagement and ultimately wedding photos of them. (You sort of know immediately when it’s a good fit). Many of these same couples have started families, so we’ve also captured their newborns, 1st birthdays and following photos over the years AND those of their siblings. This expo is where you get great information and where many lasting relationships are born.
This year’s expo, hosted again by Bridal Traditions Wedding & Prom Attire is Sunday, March 11th at the John A. Walker Center at Wilkes Community College from 1 – 4 pm. Don’t miss the opportunity to get some great info and have fun with your support team.
We look forward to meeting you there!
Recently we were hired by good friend and fellow wedding aficionado, Kelly of BeYOUtiful Prom Boutique at Bridal Traditions to take some commercial fashion photos for her. We go way back with Kelly and with her amazing business, so we were jazzed to jump in and do our part to help her as she prepares her marketing materials for 2018’s prom season. We photographed model and real junior-prom attendee Stacie Shumate in her actual prom gown purchased from BeYOUtiful Prom. The fashion shoot took place in our outdoor portrait garden at the Pixels’ studio in Wilkesboro. We photographed Stacie’s portraits just three short years ago in the peach orchards and can’t believe how much she has changed in such a short time. It was a pleasure and a treat! Thanks for letting us be a part of your business and life and for letting us watch you grow Stacie. We love family portraits whether they are set in the studio, the great outdoors, a specific location like the mountains or high country, or on our property in our outdoor portrait garden. The wedding, on April 22nd at The Inn at Crestwood Resort in Blowing Rock NC, between Lance and Fiona Martin was the perfect springtime event: kilt, weather, laid-back bride and all. The couple had a small and intimate gathering of friends and family from all over the country and different parts of the world, including friends from Switzerland and Scotland. Only one bridesmaid and one groomsmen were in the wedding party. Each detail was well planned, but when it came to the day, they just trusted everything to go smoothly and as planned. And it did, including the brief arrival of sunshine for a period.
Weather can be dodgy in April, so Fiona wisely chose to have the event indoors. Good thing too, because the Scottish inspired clouds were out and it did rain. Fortunately, it cleared long enough for photos. Even during the ceremony and reception though, the views from the windows were spectacular with Grandfather Mountain in the distance. They could not have chosen a more fitting spot for a groom in Scottish attire and a bride who looked like a Celtic Fairy.Even though the couple are from South Carolina, they are serious cyclists and choose the Inn at Crestwood because of their love for the area. They’ve cycled in this area many, many times and so it was no surprise that they towed their bikes with them for their wedding weekend. The day before the ceremony, they went for a long road ride together along the Blue Ridge Parkway. But I wasn’t kidding about how serious they are as cyclists. To share their love of it with everyone, the couple gave water bottles and bicycle bottle openers as favors to guests.Brides come in all types and temperaments, and Fiona is easily one of the most laid-back relaxed brides we have ever worked with. Her trust in all of her chosen vendors allowed everyone to be relaxed; each of us, from photographers to caterers, were able to take care of them and provide the best service. It’s refreshing when clients have complete trust in your work and don’t give you a list of specifics that sometimes hamper creativity.Lance and Fiona shared that a few of the highlights were when Lance choked up during the ceremony, that they were able to chat with guests out on the patio before the reception started and when the dance floor flooded with ALL the guests who wanted to dance to a song by Average White Band. The reception was a real party!Congrats to these two! We look forward to wishing them a Happy Anniversary this time next year.
If you’re interested in the vendors, Fiona and Lance chose for their wedding, have a look!
