Just as when your life changes, when your business changes, it’s time for a new look… and in the world of marketing, we call that rebranding. Pixels is asked to help businesses rebrand with new logo treatments and visual vocabularies all the time, but it’s particularly fun when it’s someone you know and respect. Enter Haylee Greene.
Haylee is a baker and the owner of Indulge Specialty Cakes & Baked Goods. We created her original branded logo, and businesses cards too, back in 2015. We had a blast because 1) she’s a dynamo and has been such a wonderful friend, and 2) we happen to have in common the fact that Indulge and Pixels are specialty vendors who work events like weddings. In other words, we often run in the same circles.
Haylee stepped away from the baking business for a season (and got married!) and when she decided to come back to the business, she wanted a refresh and we were happy to help.
Original business card and logo for Indulge Bakery designed in 2015:
As we do with all branding clients, we started with a conversation about what she wanted from the logo in this new world and asked for inspiration and examples of what she found attractive. Haylee shared a desire for something more earthy in terms of palette and more handmade – even hand-drawn in look and feel (like her gorgeous baked creations) and provided us with some parameters. It was an overhaul and we enjoyed the challenge of making the look different, but still indicative of who she is, what her business does and appealing to the eye.
Her response from the first round of logos: “You have outdone yourself!! Honestly, I don’t know how I’m going to choose! You definitely nailed exactly what my vision was.”
First round of concepts for the updated Indulge Specialty Cakes & Baked Goods:
After some tweaking, we sent along a second set and she reviewed those as well. When she found the winner, she wrote us to say, “Thank you for working so hard. It seems even more important to me this time for many reasons. I love that you are so willing to help me make it perfect.”
Final logo design for Indulge Specialty Cakes & Baked Goods:
Rebranded final business card design for Indulge:
The business card design was just as fun and gave Ryan the chance to throw out some wild card ideas to see where Haylee was with thoughts on taking the branding beyond the logo. In the end, she opted for a mix of traditional and earthy, which suits Haylee as a person and how she wants to market the business.
[By the way, and not for nothing, Haylee and Indulge make crazy good cakes and cupcakes, plus AH-MAZING whoopee pies!!]

There is an African proverb that goes: “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want far, go together.” Collaboration is a beautiful thing for many reasons and recently we experienced that again on the commercial side of our photography business. We were contacted by the owner of KLI – Kathryn Lily Interiors, Jody Kurtz, to photograph her designs for the interiors of a gorgeous home.
KLI collaborated with MBI, the builders of the house at the Blue Ridge Mountain Club development. We’ve photographed MBI projects in the past and when they referred Kurtz to us, we were excited to spend some time focusing on the interior design work.
For this project, Ryan was on duty and worked directly with Jody and a member of her design team, to capture their clean and elegant styling in each room. They discussed the shot list and coordinated seamlessly. Ryan said that because they knew what they wanted and stayed a room or two ahead of him, he was able to get a cache of amazing photos of the entire house in a matter of hours.
In the past, when we’ve taken architectural images for commercial use, we’ve focused on the construction and craftsman aspects of the build, things like cabinetry, countertops, exteriors, decks, custom fireplaces and so on. For this shoot there was shift in focus on the finishes that Kathryn Lily Interiors put into that space. There are shots that show off the overall space, but also more intimate photos of certain design aspects, textures, color patterns and overall balance. Ryan loved working with the KLI team and appreciated the organization and creativity of that partnership and collaboration. Beautiful results in the home and in the images.

So a couple of things stuck with me after this recent photo session (read: party). One, I love it when people understand the true value of a printed photo. It’s not because it’s my profession to take pictures, it’s because I feel like I’ve met a landsman… someone from “my homeland or country” who appreciates what I appreciate. I value printed images. I love seeing framed photos at people’s homes when I’m there. I love thinking of them deciding that that particular image was so wonderful, they printed it, framed it and put it on a mantel, office desk or bedside table. They thought, “I want to see this as often as possible and to be reminded.”
Two, it stuck with me that lovers of printed photos know that images are not only daily pieces of joy, they can last longer than a life.
When Ryan photographed the celebration of 50 years of marriage for Kate and Otis McNeil, Kate said “Not to be morbid, but truly a complement to your work: These are the photos we are proud to have displayed at our funeral whenever that day comes.” And she wasn’t morbid, or sad or even wistful. She meant it and that means the world to us.
Kate & Otis McNeil celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on December 8th of 2018 (their actual anniversary is December 22, 1968) with a massive party at The Event Center at Summit Square in Winston Salem, NC. So much thought, effort, preparation, coordination and love went into making this a special evening.
Family and friends came from all of the US to reunite and celebrate.
In speaking with Kate during the months leading up to the event to coordinate the photos it was obvious what a momentous occasion this was for her and Otis. We loved that it was not lost on them how important marriage is and what a triumph of love, commitment and fortitude 50 years is.
Kate wanted to make sure that we captured the party atmosphere, but she was especially keen that Ryan took plenty of posed and candid images of all their family that would be in attendance. So we coordinated family members photos prior to the event start time, much like a wedding.
After the event, Kate and Otis ordered images of their kids, grandkids and themselves and many members of their extended families have also ordered photos of themselves with their children’s families. It fills me up thinking of all those family members, spread out all over the country, seeing the same images from that day hanging somewhere in their homes.
If you take the time to celebrate a life, a marriage, a graduation, a birth – and you plan a gathering or party around it with guests and family, really make it an event – we encourage you to hire a photographer to capture those images that you’ll want to see on your desk and look at daily and those you’ll want people to remember you by later.
We love family portraits whether they are set in the studio, the great outdoors, a specific location like the mountains or high country, or on our property in our outdoor portrait garden. This lovely family all wanted to be a part of the maternity shoot. They came to our outdoor portrait garden during the fall and I’m proud to say that the colors were amazing. We had no hand in that, but we love it when we can shoot sessions here and enjoy what God has created for autumn and for us.
Big brother Conner knew exactly what to do in the garden and had the most fun running around, laughing, and making everyone work extra hard to keep up with him. He belly laughed and giggled for the camera, while his Mom – at the time 36 weeks pregnant and seriously gorgeous – was serene and his Dad was happy and proud. When they returned to the studio a week later to see their photo presentation I was touched by how much her husband oohed and ahhed over her photos and told her how beautiful she was. Let’s face it, most Moms this far along in their pregnancy feel far from that about themselves.
Their new daughter was born on her due date, December 3rd and we just spent time capturing her newborn portraits. We look forward to photographing her first full year and getting to know this family better!
This mom was referred to us by her co-worker. Because of our referral program, this client now gets a free portrait session and $50 in print credits. Consider taking part in this program!

Barrett Spillman was born to Elisabeth & Isaac Spillman. We had the pleasure of photographing their gorgeous wedding (a fun story behind that one too) and are now loving their new little man.
These new parents are perfectly smitten with him, and they should be.
Like his father, Barrett is going to grow up loving the outdoors and may also become a great hunter one day too. I know his dad has dreams for his son, but right now it’s more about sleeping through the night and growing up strong. Ryan and I were happy to pass along some of our Finley’s already outgrown camo attire, though.
Since this couple loves to be outside and loves nature, we decided to keep the attire and props to earthy neutral colors, with simple softs furs and adorable little bib overalls for his portraits.
Moms-to-be: we keep all of this stuff on hand, clean and ready to go so that new Mamas don’t have one more thing to stress about.
Welcome, Barrett to a new world of adventure, outdoor play, snuggles from your parents (grandparents and all of their friends) and something amazing every single day. We love you already!
