Our Foundation Part 2 – Bridal Portraits

Our photography foundations series continues with bridal portraits. Ladies……… we love doing these. You look beautiful – ALL OF YOU. You’re hair and makeup are done and you’re wearing one of the most glamour dresses you’re ever going to own and in the right setting, it’s magical.
We’ve taken bridal portraits months before the wedding, weeks or days before and even after the wedding has taken place. Sometimes, the timetable doesn’t work out and we are more than happy to see the bride again in the same or a different setting after she’s a Mrs.

Our Finley James’ 6 month portraits

Our little man is 6 months old, has a great smile (his chin when he’s grinning is so stinking cute it cracks me up), big bright eyes and is a target-rich environment for kisses and nibbling. All the clichés of parenthood are swirling around us. You know how falling in romantic love opens up a new world of understanding when it comes to love songs? Well, just have a baby and you’ll hear yourself saying “time is flying by!” and “he’s growing so fast!” They may be tired phrases, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t true.

We took some time during the various orchard portrait sessions this season to grab some personal shots with our little man. Hat: check! Vest and dapper plaid shirt: check! Boots and sweet attitude: check! Happy parents: absolutely!pixels on paper family and child portrait photographers wilkesboro nc photopixels on paper family and child portrait photographers wilkesboro nc photopixels on paper family and child portrait photographers wilkesboro nc photopixels on paper family and child portrait photographers wilkesboro nc photoAnyone need a plumber in a bow tie? We happen to keep one on staff at all times. He’s efficient and cheeky. Sorry, not sorry for the terrible joke. To cover all our bases, we also snagged some of his six month portraits in the portrait studio.pixels on paper family and child portrait photographers wilkesboro nc photopixels on paper family and child portrait photographers wilkesboro nc photopixels on paper family and child portrait photographers wilkesboro nc photoThanks for letting us share, gush a little and show off Finley. Wait until he has his first birthday……!

The Importance of Place : Locations for Portraits

Ryan and I love to travel and we have so many memories that are grounded (pardon the pun) in specific places. In fact, there are several spots that – the minute we drive up – we’re flooded with that sense of place, special moments that we remember, and those we hope to make in the years to come. From your grandmother’s backyard to certain mountain trails, family summer spots or just favorite views – places matter to all of us maybe more than we realize until we’re there. Capturing clients in those locations for photo shoots is important and we love how those places are a character in your personal stories.

All of these engagement portraits were taken at specifically chosen spots…. places not chosen by us, but by the couples – and for a reason. We always ask our brides and grooms a series of questions about themselves and several of them relate to how and where they met, where they like to spend time together, and which places in their lives communicate who they are. It not only serves the practical purpose of planning, but tells us so much about our subjects.
Maddie & Preston both grew up and went to school in Jefferson NC, and this barn is a testament to their love of home.

Above: Generations of the Kessel family worked in and are credited with the restoration of Loray Mill in Gastonia. Christine and Adam wanted their portraits taken at the Mill.

Michelle and Randy grew up beside each other – seriously. Their family farms were separated by fields and this fence line.

Kendra and Nathan love visiting NC wineries in their spare time. The Piccione Vineyards were a perfect spot for their engagement portraits. A picnic? YESSSS!!!

Katie & Tim both met and worked together at The Biltmore Estate in Asheville and wandering around with them and their sweet pup for this portrait session was a blast!

Kathren loves these old trees on the property of her Grandmother’s home where both she and Nathan live. The sense of place and memory in trees like this one make portraits into heirlooms.

Finally – this. My heart could explode when I look at this place. Our home. The home I share with my partner in business, my partner in life and the sweet child we are raising together. Our clients, friends and family have graced that porch, those rooms and the surrounding yards and garden. Talk about grounding. This does it for me. Hence the reason for having our family photographed on the front porch.

When you’re considering a photo shoot – whether it’s for an engagement portrait session, a family reunion, a special milestone – do NOT be afraid to consider the places that matter to you the most. They may not feel or seem glamorous or sophisticated or even perfectly manicured, but the results will make you sooooooooooooo happy in both the short and long run.

music, memories, & the magic of merlefest ……..

We joined the Merlefest brigade of official photographers in 2015 and as our 4th year approaches and we prepare for our badges to arrive and the admin stuff to cross our desks, we’re getting jazzed. I just wrote about dreaming of spring and the orchard we love. This feels the same to me. There’s heat and sweat – the layers come off as the spring air evaporates the dew, lawn chairs are set in rows, the stages are literally set and the throngs arrive to listen to the very best in blue grass and Americana. We love Merlefest.

York Family portraits – 4 generations & the gift that keeps on giving

I have a pal who finds hilarious pictures of her family from old portrait sessions and gives them as gifts each year, along with NEW portraits. It’s sort of a repurpose, re-gift, re-laugh about it. The time progression is its own reward along with her Mother’s laughter and recollections.

The York sons did something similar for Christmas last year, minus the goofy shots from the 1990s. These three men bought a family portrait session – a gift card from Pixels actually – and presented it to their parents, Mark & Denise York. The gift card was good for a family portrait of the entire York family, something they knew that their Mom had been wanting for a very long time.

Listen up, sons and daughters, especially if you’re looking for a Christmas or anniversary present for your parents: your mom and dad did all of that laundry, schlepped all of that sporting equipment, sewed quilted ballet bags to carry your point shoes, baked untold dozens of Toll House cookies, worked with paper mache, checked homework after 11 pm, wiped your rear end, taught you to drive and throw a football in a tight spiral and stood in line to buy toys you’ve long forgotten about …………… you with me? THEY EARNED IT.

Mrs. York cashed in her certificate at the end of August after undertaking the kind of coordination that would make the Pentagon cringe. She had 15 family members (4 generations) to pin down and she stuck the landing. On a gorgeous day at a picturesque family farm in North Wilkesboro, we met up with this crew and thank goodness for perfect weather. Finding another date would have been many more months in the making.

When we photograph families, extended families and multiple generations, we always capture a variety of combinations for the individual family units and the matriarchs and patriarchs who want everyone and all the time. Gift cards for photography are available for any occasion at all times but are especially popular at Christmas. If you’re interested, please contact us and we’ll start planning.
