The other part of Pixels

Asked to talk about photographing families, children, couples smooching in the woods, portraits of beloved friends and special milestones, I can gab on without stopping. But we have another part of our business at Pixels on Paper and it’s one that Ryan and I are so deeply proud of and are equally excited to promote.

At Pixels, we are also business and commercial photographers and called on for real estate and business profile photography, headshots and a number of commercial projects in Wilkesboro, Charlotte and the surrounding area. Ryan is also an amazing graphic designer.

Graphic design, establishing and developing brands, creating logos, coordinating visual vocabularies and identity systems for businesses, large and small, holds a special place in our business.

We love entrepreneurs, causes, non-profits, fund-raisers and events and established community organizations and Ryan has nearly 20 years of graphic design experience. His portfolio was huge before we started Pixels. We’ve added even more since then. Below is a mere sampling of favorites.

If you are in need of business photography or headshots, real estate or commercial photography for collateral, your website or other promotional needs, please contact us. If graphic design or branding consulting is something you’d would like to discuss or learn more about, we hope you’ll contact us.

We love family portraits whether they are set in the studio, the great outdoors, a specific location like the mountains or high country, or on our property in our outdoor portrait garden. Orozco Christian Crafts – commercial product photography for a wedding client with a great business

One of the joys – and believe me there are many – of being a photographer is seeing something happen with a client that you had no idea about. Do you follow? Sometimes, you’re taking family photos of a couple with their first child and discover later that the second is on the way. Or a family has gathered at a reunion and later, when a beloved member has passed, we all realize that the photos were the last. Time moves.

This is not that story though. This is business and a wonderful one at that. We photographed Ashley and Oscar’s wedding last year and fell in love with them and their story. Now, Ashley has created Orozco’s Christian Craft Shop and you can find them and Ashley’s amazing specialty work on Facebook.

Pixels on Paper for Ashley Orozco's Christian Craft Shop
Ashley hired us to take some photos of her products to use in their promotions and marketing and of course, we loved doing it. Among the various hand-made products she is creating are paper and fabric wedding bouquets and boutonnieres. They are just over-the-top special, beautiful and made with love.
Every order is completely customized for each of her customers and her outreach is so much fun. I encourage anyone interested in learning more about her shop and ordering from her to visit the Facebook page and get in touch.

Contact us if you or your business has a commercial photography or graphic design need. We would be happy to help. www.pixelsonpaper.net

Blue Ridge Mountain Club Blowing Rock NC | MBI Builders Create a Custom Home | We create the Architectural Photography

We photograph people living their lives and celebrating milestones. It’s one of the coolest and most enriching things about being a photographer. All of those stories and lives intersect with ours for a brief moment, or over years, and we’ve definitely been changed by that time with our clients. When we are asked by businesses, builders or other commercial entities to capture their particular creations and talents however, we tend to say yes eagerly to those too. The inanimate is way more animated than you might think and tells its own story. And houses, well-wrought and designed, are amazing to enter and capture.

A few weeks ago, we photographed another custom built home by MBI Builders LLC at the Blue Ridge Mountain Club in Blowing Rock NC. Talk about a gorgeous place ready to be filled with memories and stories…! This home has epic views out most of the windows (the views in our images look fake, but I promise you, they aren’t), and we had an “ordered from a catalog” day to shoot. This house is situated perfectly on the lot and depending on the room you’re in, you can feel like you’re in the treetops.

Some unique aspects are not only the views, though. The craftsman style wood work and custom cabinetry are perfectly hewn. All of the counter tops and inlays in the bathrooms and showers are made from concrete and custom created by MBI. Wood, concreate, and panorama surround you in every direction. All of the elements seemed to have voices of their own.MBI Builders custom home blue ridge mountain club architectural photography pixels on paper commercial photographers photoMBI Builders custom home blue ridge mountain club architectural photography pixels on paper commercial photographers photoMBI Builders custom home blue ridge mountain club architectural photography pixels on paper commercial photographers photoThe kitchen counter tops look like a blend of earth and sky, something you can see out any of the windows, and each room invites both a call to dream about adventure as well as a desire for comfort and rest. Once again, MBI knocked the cover off the ball and we loved being able to capture key images for their brand, their portfolio and the homeowners who will move into this wonderful space.

If you are in real estate or business and need professional shots taken of your company, staff or office space, commercial, residential building or property, please give us a call. We’d love to be the ones to help your project or property come to life.

What Fuels Us – Part 1

We had a conversation recently about motivations, inspirations, choices we make each day, what makes us happy and other little idiosyncratic things that make us tick as individuals and as a couple of creatives. We could write a book about our adventures and what fuels us, but here is a first pass, from Ryan.

Hi Gang!! I’m jumping in here and hitting the things from my perspective. Hope you enjoy.
Activities that turn us on: Hiking! These do not have to be strenuous by any means, just nice strolls through new places. We are always on the look out for new shoot locations and often find ourselves looking at every aspect of a place. “If we were going to do a shoot here, how /where would we pose people?”

A second thing I love (and this came to mind more than once) is cooking. It’s similar to how we approach photography, taking concepts that we have seen or read about for various recipes and adding a bit of ourselves and our “twist” to make them different is always fun. And we love to go to Boondocks, which is basically our local hangout even if it is 45 minutes away. I love craft beers, so count me in for anything that’s as black as motor oil and aged in bourbon barrels, and typically 10%ABV and up. [In my best Homer Simpson voice: “BEEEEEEEEEEER. Sweet sustainer of life….”]

BOONDOCKS! We love this restaurant and brewery in West Jefferson and the folks who operate it. Family!

What bands/music? Well, you know we cover Merlefest as official photographers, so these answers won’t surprise you…. Avett Brothers, Dave Matthews Band, Pokey Lafarge. But also Dean Martin, Trampled By Turtles, anything solid bluegrass, electronic dance music (EDM), anything with a good bass/drum combo that I  can “turn up to 11.”

What faces fuel me? Misty’s for sure. I can tell a lot of what’s going on by reading her expressions. Also the look on a client’s face when we sneak a peek at the back of camera and see the awesomeness we are capturing. That’s the best!

What types of media do you consume out of complete love? Books: Game of Thrones series – before they became a TV show and became even cool-er. I tend to love more of the Lord of the Rings fantasy types of series that require an active imagination with good descriptions so I can “see” the story in my head. Movies: action thrillers like the Bourne series and James Bond, animated Pixar anything. And with TV, I am obsessed with “This Old House,” am a DIY/HGTV junkie as well as stuff on Food Network/Cooking Channel.

What part of a photo session turns you on the most? Trying to get to a location and then figuring out how to shoot it from a perspective that may not be what everyone else would see. Safe shots are still OK to do, but the fun comes in trying something that you think may not work, but if it does, its going to be epic.

What’s your favorite time of day? Sunset, it’s a time for magic with lighting, but it goes super fast as the light changes by the second, so knowing how to adapt and adjust quickly is a necessity.

What scriptures do you recite and rely on most? Romans 5:8: “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

What places or aspects of travel provide a personal or creative “reboot?” For the vacation spots, there are different ways of looking at it: All inclusive for the times where you just want to fully relax and not worry about what to do other than figure out what drink to order next or what pool to go to. I love Charleston. It’s always going to be a favorite spot from a food/site-seeing perspective. Even in the mundane travels, I like taking any combination of backroads when going somewhere leads to a fun antique store or mom-and-pop restaurant. I love finding places that we’d miss if we stuck to the main roads all the time.

What’s your favorite room in your house? The kitchen, not only because we built it basically from the studs out when we moved in, but it’s another place for creativity, to try new recipes and have fun enjoying the hard work after.

Well, that seems like enough, so let’s call that a wrap for me. Have a great weekend, everybody.

Misty? You’re up, honey!

pixels vendor spotlight: Bridal Traditions Wedding and Prom Attire

Pixels On Paper Photography All About Prom 2014 Photo

Somehow, after all of these years and too many collaborations to count, we’ve never blogged about Bridal Traditions as a beloved and favorite vendor and partner of ours. Kelly Shumate, the owner of BT, is a dear friend and not only have we worked with her, but for her, creating her custom logo and branding.Shumate Wedding Anniversary Bride and Groom photo

We also took her wedding renewal portraits in one of the more unique and beautiful sessions we’ve had with a bride and groom. Honestly, that’s the word for Kelly and the options and perspective she provides to her customers at Bridal Traditions and beYOUtiful Promsunique. Kelly built her business from the ground up starting with a vision but only working at it part-time. She found gowns for weddings, provided dresses and accessories for proms, and later participated in prom campaigns like All About Prom where she could supply the right attire to each lady. By 2008, with no debt (NO. DEBT.) and a storefront, Kelly left her other job and became fulltime owner, operator and visionary for BT.All About Prom 2013Alicia Porter Bridal Portraitsprom boho fashion portrait photography by Wilkesboro NC Photographers Pixels On PaperCaudle Bridal photoGoforth/Harrison Pixels On Paper Photography Bridal portrait photography photoKelly is fun to collaborate with because she brings so many creative and clever options to the table when we’re the photographers for a particular promotion or event. You can have the word “Traditions” in your business name and still be modern, fun and completely distinct. Every bride, every prom attendee wants to be and look remarkable. You like Scarlett O’Hara? Kelly and her team have got ya. Love The Great Gatsby? Done. Bohemian Chic? She can make you into that perfect gypsy. We look forward to many more years of working with Kelly and her amazing retail operations at Bridal Traditions and beYOUtiful Prom Attire.
