The Arnold Family

Timing. It’s in the stars, I think sometimes. Once again, we made plans for a photo shoot with LONG TIME clients and pals Meghan and Jeremy Arnold and ended up changing them due to access and Covid-19. But who can complain when the results are so beautiful? We found ourselves perfectly happy on the campus of Lenoir-Rhyne.

Big baseball fan and player Jeremy grew up in Hickory and has great memories of playing games on their campus. What a gorgeous day we had and with their two children, and our Finley in tow, it could not have been a better spot.

We’ve photographed this family since the very beginning before Meghan and Jeremy were married. From their engagement, wedding, the birth of daughter Berklee and then son Wyatt, we’ve watched them all grow as a family.

At nearly every shoot, we grab an image of Jeremy tossing daughter Berklee in the air, and I’m so pleased that this tradition has held.

Ryan took these images, while I assisted with lens, styling, finding the next spot and wrangling the little ones.

I love both the dynamic images and the posed as well. With families who have young ones, it is less important to pose than it is to get a sense of their connection as a family and their individual personalities.

When I think back to the engagement portraits for Jeremy and Meghan, I cannot believe the passage of time. But I see them all together, looking every bit like they waltzed out of a J. Crew catalog, and think: they are exactly where and who they should be.

A Fall Day with the Senter Family

Ryan, Finley and I got a break from world-weariness and responsibilities to hang out with our dear friends and clients, the Senters. Mom Judy, Dad Travis and little Ava who is two met up with us at an orchard in Morganton we’d recently visited.

Even though this orchard was no longer yielding apples and picking was over, we loved the trials so much from our last visit that we returned to let the kids play and wander, while we enjoyed the sunshine. It was a gorgeous fall day.

Seeing how big Ava has gotten was a joy and she and Finley had fun together climbing and playing. We’ve been photographing this little monkey since before she was born. Judy’s maternity portraits are favorites, Ava’s newborn, 6 month and one year photos were taken by us and our friendship with them has just continued to grow.

After our time in the orchard, we shifted to a more adult theme and headed to a vineyard, also in Morganton.

We spent a good part of the day with the Senters, which means that along with wardrobe changes for the shoot, there was a real sense of relaxation and chill. We don’t have to ask these guys to “hold your daughter and smile” for photos. These three are such a playful unit and it was just our job to have fingers on shutters.

I don’t know what I love most about the photo just above: the fairytale princess gown paired with mussed hair, the wistful stare into the mid-horizon or that all three of these sweethearts are in the frame.

Here’s to friendship. Here’s to family and here’s to getting away for a day of play, rambling, conversation and escape to the great outdoors.

Tevepaugh Boys in the Apple Orchard

Finally, we got to gather in the family orchard to see little Liam Tevepaugh. This was his 6 month portrait session and the day was outstanding. This baby boy was born during Covid to first time parents Cody and Courtney.

Due to the pandemic, I was unable to photograph his newborn session, but I did send my camera and instructions about the lenses and lighting to Courtney so that she could capture his newborn photos herself. We try to provide service, folks! Six months later, off to the family orchards we went.

This was the peak season for getting everyone together. Dad Cody is a twin and his brother Casey’s little boy, Connor came along to make sure that his new first cousin had a playmate and some help learning the landscape. I even captured a few shots of Connor with his father Casey, who tends to run from the camera and is more interested in helping us with crates, ladders and set ups.

My own boy Finley had a blast running around on this day as well. Liam’s mom along with Courtney’s mom and sister also came and there were plenty of adults to help jump up and down trying to get kids to laugh, take turns holding the little ones and generally enjoying being together. These are members of my family, so it was the best being able to see them all on such a gorgeous day outdoors to celebrate the newest Tevepaugh.

Absher Family’s Fall Outdoor Portraits

Three generations of Abshers gathered to have family portraits taken and this was another of those outdoor shoots planned that could have gone sideways if not for location and will. But we did it and the results are just what matriarch Mrs. Absher wanted.

October 10th was a day when Pixels scheduled multiple fall family portrait sessions, but massive rain and wind storms meant we had to postpone and reschedule several. A little rain between friends is one thing, but we were in a deluge. Like so many multigenerational families, the Abshers are spread out all over the state of NC and we knew it would be next to impossible to reconvene, so after chatting with the Mom-in-charge, we went for it.

And we pulled it off! There were several key factors, beyond willpower. One was location, but this was easily solved. Instead of meeting off-site somewhere, we took all of the photos in the matriarch and patriarch’s yard. They live near us, and after a drive by, we knew it was going to work. She bought mums and straw bells and we made it work.

Grandparents, parents and kids on hay bales in front of their home place: what could be sweeter?

I love the colors chosen for the youngest members of the clan. They loved being around their grandparents and the images will be heirlooms for generations to come.

If you are thinking of outdoor family portraits, regardless of season, please contact us. We would love to be your portraitists and documentarians.

The Waters Family Fall Photos

Reunited and it feels so good… although it was a rainy day and we had to zig and zag logistically. We LOVE this family. The Waters are Scott, Susan, Maddie and Emma and we go way back. Scott was the pastor who married Ryan and me, so our bond is pretty special.

As the Youth Pastor at Forest Hill Church in Charlotte, Scott got to know Ryan and me when we volunteered with him to help with youth activities on Sundays and on retreats. After we moved to Wilkesboro, we stayed in touch, but the call from Susan to set up a shoot was awesome.

Long before Finley was born and we were active in the church, we remember these girls as infants and we have watched them grow up.
I specifically remember an instance when we were working with Scott and Emma was just a baby. Susan was pushing through those tough chapters of letting her cry it out at bedtime while sitting outside the door, crying herself. When Scott and the girls would come our way for Merlefest each year, he would stay and volunteer with us. We’ve cherished their friendship and their example as parents and people.

During this complicated time, they reached out for an outdoor family photo shoot at Appalachian State University, where Maddie is a student. Unfortunately, this was during the long and rainy days of early October. Their name may be Waters, but … it complicated things. Leave it to Ryan to find a great backup location near the Blue Ridge Parkway. I love that they had App State umbrellas that could be incorporated too.

The images are glorious. They are a beautiful family, made up of beautiful souls and I’m thrilled that we were able to make it happen.
