Exploring Family in Photos

Ryan and I love being parents and so much has shifted in our brains, lives and focus since the day our son arrived. It started earlier than that of course, when we knew we were pregnant, but the amount of time and effort needed to be present definitely caused a pivot – and it has been a beautiful one. We’ve always thought of our clients in totality – seen them in chapters once we’ve gotten to know them. They fall in love and become engaged, they marry, some start families and at each juncture, we hope to be there with our cameras.Pixels On Paper newborn photographers. More recently, we’re seeing The Cycle of Family, as I’m calling it today, with more clarity and joy, and the result is that we would like to spend even more time capturing YOUR FAMILY on film. Not just special monumental occasions, but doing life. We want to focus more on the babies and dogs together, the outdoor play, family in casual settings, you guys in the middle of being together, raising kids, enjoying the community of family and friends – cradle to retirement and everything in between.

99.2% of life is not set-up, well-lit and complete with wardrobe changes and while I totally made up that statistic, I feel pretty good about it. Life isn’t always getting to wear the new shoes or have your hair cut and curled. It’s just life and what we love so much about that fact is that daily life is actually gorgeous. Maybe not the oil changes or diaper changes, but I promise that if you spend it with those you love, the results on film will speak for themselves.
One option – bring your family together for a reunion.
Plan a Day in the Life session or two.
Invite us to your home during the holidays.
More than anything, we’re finding that the details, the fun little off moments are what make the stories. And what goes better with stories than pictures.
Consider a “just because” or Day in the Life photo session this year. We’d love to make it happen for you!

ellis family outdoor portraits – elijah turns one

Another family we love and have been photographing since forever is the Ellis Family and they have added a member over the last year. Ashley and Kevin hired us to photograph their engagement and wedding photos and we’ve stayed in touch since. This couple is so loving and so cool and fun that we were happy to have another reason to see them when sweet Isaiah was born. We photographed his newborn pics and he was so bright-eyed and cute. The following year, the Ellis’s came back to us for family portraits on Isaiah’s first birthday.

Isaiah – One Year!

For this most recent portrait session with newest member Elijah, the Ellis’s wanted to be outdoors again, but the constant rain earlier this season caused us to reschedule this session three times. Mom Ashley joked that Elijah might turn two by the time the rain stopped. But as always, everything happens for a reason. When we finally got to photograph them, it was gorgeous out and Ashley’s Mom was visiting from out of state so she was able to be a part of the day. We all met up at a park in Statesville, NC where Ashley once played as a child.

Like all kids, no two are alike. We’ve joked in past blogs that Isaiah, with his ties, looks like a serious businessman. Ashley calls one year old Elijah her “Wild Man” and she warned that he probably wouldn’t be as easy to photograph at this age as his older brother. The kid indeed is full of energy, excitement, curiosity and is rambunctious and always on the go. Keeping up with him was fun and we were up for it.

This pic below cracks me up. How much would you pay to know what Elijah was thinking? He looks so suave and cute and the curls on the top of his head are just too much.

“On the road of life together.”
This photo – all of these photos – give me so much joy and hope for the future. Family continues to be the institution we all turn to the most for inspiration, comfort and hope. Cheers to the Ellis’s. Keep holding together you four. Keep chasing each other around and hugging and bonding. We hope to see you again soon.

Dreams of Blooms – Orchard Photography

It’s January. It’s as cold as a well-digger’s bootie and we’ve gotten snow and experienced unseasonable – some southerners would say unreasonable – temps. But it IS winter after all. While I’m home with sweet Finley, every day is an adventure, but the seasons don’t stop, and as any hard-working meteorologist will tell you, neither does weather. There’s something comforting about the expectations of each season, because we know that the earth is going to keep turning, the sun keep shining and that will bring spring. Some days, I dream of spring and because of what we do at Pixels, I dream of our favorite orchard.

We hope you’ll consider getting family portraits taken with us this year – even those graduation photos can be taken early and ready for graduation cards. We’ll be posting dates for sessions when it gets a little closer and we know more about the weather and what the orchard will be like. In the meantime, a girl can dream.

Family Portraits at Chapel Hill

Every state in the US has it’s schools and teams and naturally North Carolina is no different. The rivalries and passions around them are intense and whether you participate or not, you’re aware. And really, it’s pretty fun to watch and nice to see loyalty and pride played out on some level. This family is passionate about UNC Chapel Hill where both parents – Carisa and Bradley attended and are proud alums.

Naturally, when it was time to shoot a new family portrait session, they turned to the hallowed grounds – and it wasn’t necessary to bribe their kids who are absolute tarheels. The campus grounds were a perfect place to shoot Carisa, Bradley and their children Slater and Alarie. We’ve photographed this family before and they have such a lively joy about them, the shoot itself was a breeze. While walking from one place to the next parents were able to share stories with the kids of their time there. The family goes to athletic games on campus as often as they can. Slater was particularly excited to go to the school book store after our session so that he could get championship memorabilia.

York Family portraits – 4 generations & the gift that keeps on giving

I have a pal who finds hilarious pictures of her family from old portrait sessions and gives them as gifts each year, along with NEW portraits. It’s sort of a repurpose, re-gift, re-laugh about it. The time progression is its own reward along with her Mother’s laughter and recollections.

The York sons did something similar for Christmas last year, minus the goofy shots from the 1990s. These three men bought a family portrait session – a gift card from Pixels actually – and presented it to their parents, Mark & Denise York. The gift card was good for a family portrait of the entire York family, something they knew that their Mom had been wanting for a very long time.

Listen up, sons and daughters, especially if you’re looking for a Christmas or anniversary present for your parents: your mom and dad did all of that laundry, schlepped all of that sporting equipment, sewed quilted ballet bags to carry your point shoes, baked untold dozens of Toll House cookies, worked with paper mache, checked homework after 11 pm, wiped your rear end, taught you to drive and throw a football in a tight spiral and stood in line to buy toys you’ve long forgotten about …………… you with me? THEY EARNED IT.

Mrs. York cashed in her certificate at the end of August after undertaking the kind of coordination that would make the Pentagon cringe. She had 15 family members (4 generations) to pin down and she stuck the landing. On a gorgeous day at a picturesque family farm in North Wilkesboro, we met up with this crew and thank goodness for perfect weather. Finding another date would have been many more months in the making.

When we photograph families, extended families and multiple generations, we always capture a variety of combinations for the individual family units and the matriarchs and patriarchs who want everyone and all the time. Gift cards for photography are available for any occasion at all times but are especially popular at Christmas. If you’re interested, please contact us and we’ll start planning.
