Our Finley Turns One with a Cake smash

America’s beloved Walt Disney said, “I think of a child’s mind as a blank book. During the first years of his life, much will be written on the pages. The quality of that writing will affect his life profoundly.”

I don’t know what was more profound this last year of our lives and the first of Finley’s. Everything he poured out, we soaked up… some of it we consumed lovingly with no sense of what the heck was going on, but more of it with the greediness of parents who understand that time is flying. I hope we filled the pages of his blank little being with the imprints of love, care, tickles, laughter, confidence and some unspoken knowledge that we have his back till our last breaths.

That’s heavy. I know, but I’m his Mama and I get a pass. Want the sweet stuff? See below. We celebrated his first birthday with the traditional cake smash and he did not disappoint.

I’m amazed at the amount of growth and change I saw in Finley in just 12 months. We opted to photograph his cake smash portraits during his birthday celebration while he was surrounded by family. A few days prior, Ryan and I sat in the middle of the floor creating his one year backdrop while he played around us in the balloons. I made his birthday cake, following a tradition where my Mom always made my birthday cakes while growing up. When he is able, he will be able to request what kind of cake he wants just like I did. Traditions run thick in our blood! It’s what memories are made of.

With Ryan behind the camera and family filling our studio, little man could not contain his excitement as I carried the cake in and placed it in front of him. In mere seconds he dove in – first with a hand and followed promptly with his his entire mouth. At one point when looking around to see that everyone was laughing and cheering and no one would stop him his arm was in the cake up to his elbow getting as big a handful as possible. He definitely likes chocolate and cake!

After eating literally 1/3 of the small cake and covering himself in icing he got a bath. Here’s a little funny but gross note…. the next morning he sneezed chocolate. I’m not kidding.
Happy Birthday, Sweet Finley. What you’ve given us far outweighs any birthday or other gifts we’ve given you. We love you, Son.

Alfresco Bridal Portraits – Late Summer in NC

This girl was born to be photographed outside. We were there to capture what Courtney thought was to be a family photo session when Cody popped the question back in the Spring of this year. She shined in the orchard setting. Surrounded by blossoms and family, it was a gorgeous day for an engagement session. Her bridal session rivaled it though.

It was important for Courtney to include details and aspects of her family’s property and life in her portraits, so we began her session at her family’s cattle farm in Wilkesboro. She chose a beautiful location near the creek with small waterfalls where she and her siblings spent most summers swimming and playing. It was a perfect spot and a perfect day. Lots of dappled light, her reflection and the sound of the water falls……… if only we’d recorded it to add here. There was natural beauty in every direction.

With the help of her mom and sister she waded through the water and slipped into her wedding gown on a rock in the middle of the creek. YUP. Waded, donned her gown alfresco and looked amazing. It can be done, folks. In some of the photos, Courtney included a quilt hand-made by husband-to-be Cody’s grandmother.

As a nod to her father and his work on the family farm, she also posed next to a hay bale. She’s a vision of elegance in a bucolic setting and we loved the juxtaposition.
We then ventured to the Brushy Mountains and to Cody’s family’s orchard. It’s apple harvest time in the mountains and she wanted to include a piece of her groom’s family heritage in portraits as well. While Cody was not allowed to see his beautiful bride during portraits, his mom and dad were on hand to help find the most beautiful spots in the orchard among the ripening apples.

An outdoor girl marries an outdoor boy. I love that for generations to come their family will look at these photos and know exactly where they took place and share in the memory of those places as well.

Sarah and Daniel Faithfest

Daniel and Sarah’s wedding was lovely, but once it was over and we shot all the images we could, we four (Daniel, Sarah, Ryan and I) all skeedaddled to attend Faithfest.  These two are huge Christian music lovers who travel to attend countless live performances each year. When it came to planning their wedding, the date and the entire day was planned around Faithfest, a Christian music concert in Wilkesboro.
The early morning Ceremony time of 10:00 am was selected in order to have all of the formalities of the wedding completed allowing them to get to the music venue along with guests and friends in time to hear their favorite bands. Included in the wedding program was an invitation for their guests to celebrate alongside them at the music festival.

Early on they asked if our wedding day photography could include going with them to Faithfest and photographing them while there. While this was certainly not the norm for us to be asked, it was a no brainer to say YES. We are official photographers at Merlefest every year and Faithfest was held at the very same venue. We love music, we know our way around every stage, nook and cranny, so we were in to play the roles of their very own paparazzi.

Daniel especially loves photography and knew that he wanted photos of the moments they would share at Faithfest, but he didn’t want the distraction of taking them himself or of having a non-professional lurking. Ryan and I are pretty stealthy. We know when to be poised and at the ready, how to move quickly and how to stay out of the way of a great moment. We document and this was so much fun to do.
Fun fact: the coordinator of the festival found out about their plans and arranged for them to be brought on stage and an announcement was made to the audience of 20,000 people that this couple had JUST gotten married. It was pretty fab.
They were greeted, congratulated and shared photo opps backstage by some of their favorite performers including headliners Casting Crowns and Mandisa. The lead singer of Casting Crowns even recalled being asked to perform at their wedding during a prior conversation with Daniel.  Both Daniel and Sarah later shared that these moments and photos are some of their favorites and most exciting memories of the day.

Man of the Year – or just some photos celebrating men

My vote for man of the year is my Ryan Case. And he did not pay me to say that. He’s the guy I married, work and live with, am raising a son with and have watched build, repair, rebuild around our house and cabin getaway too many times to count. He’s an exceptional manager, father, graphic designer, photographer, craftsman, funny man, hockey mascot and enthusiast and friend to many…. too, too many to count.

I wrote recently about parents and parenting and it got me thinking about men. The news isn’t always a big, warm hug. And advertising doesn’t always help. BUT! We are teaching our daughters how to identify and avoid the predatory jerks and we’re teaching our sons how not to become those guys. This blog is decidedly not political though, because and I’ve been blessed by watching, knowing, befriending and loving the better men among us – the good guys.

Above: when your gear becomes a baby basket for your newborn.
Below: sandbox time. Time to listen, create and play.

Happy father of two and a little man ready to be a big brother.

This officer and dad (above with his wife and little peanut) provided his hat for a newborn portrait (below).
York men – brothers and friends. This guy secretly planned a portrait session for his wife, preggers with their second child. He chose the location and clothing and surprised her.
Men prepping for a wedding: father and sons. Cuff links handed down and everyone all in.
Not quite a man yet, but he gets points for trying. It’s a wedding and dancing is part of the gig, after all.
The Hobin boys at the family camp.
This wonderful dad is now a father of two. And……….. still smiling.

Fathering a pre-teen.

Making baby Brock laugh.

Celebrating 50 years, in overalls with his favorite lady!

There still are men out there who work to be better listeners, who want to know those around them and show respect. They want to crack us up, swap stories, work along side and collaborate with us. They understand that we don’t need them, but are our fellow travelers, our friends, brothers, fathers, seekers and loves.
