On the Windfall, located in Ashe County, North Carolina is a venue we love to photograph. When couples tell us they’ve chosen it, we look forward to seeing the spots we’re familiar with and to tramping around searching for new ones. It’s perfect for a destination wedding, with cottages for the bridal party or others, ideal fly fishing nearby, gorgeous mountain views and a reception hall that when lit at night is about as magical as it gets. (No, I do not get a kick-back for talking up this place. We just love it. It’s in our top 3 for sure.)
I was not kidding about the mountain view for weddings. It’s the very definition of spectacular.
“On the Windfall is part of the Eldreth Homestead circa 1800. The Eldreths farmed the property until the mid 1900s raising cattle, crops, and children. Some of the Eldreth descendants live in Ashe County today.” When George and Carol Ford, the current owners (some of the nicest most accommodating people you will ever meet) envisioned this place, they wanted cabin/cottage meets modern convenience for guests and they succeeded. When shooting weddings there, we see guests wandering in the nearby woods and, depending on time of year, enjoying the many shades of green or the autumn leaves. The site manages to be rustic, fantastical (think tiny white lights), homey, cool, earthy and modern.
This place is as beautiful at night as it is by day and with animals to see, views to enjoy, water to sit by and places to rest and relax, it’s the perfect spot to gather those you love around you to celebrate. We’ve shot several weddings here, including Bonnie & Amanda’s, and Meghan & Josh’s. Couples and their friends alike raved about the venue and how glad they are that they chose it.
Pixels is now booking engagement sessions and weddings for 2017 and 2018. Most brides and grooms who choose our wedding package receive their engagement session FREE. Whether you’re getting married in a church, at On the Windfall or another outdoor venue, we would love to bring our years of experience, inclusive vibe and approach to wedding photography to your celebration.
We love family portraits whether they are set in the studio, the great outdoors, a specific location like the mountains or high country, or on our property in our outdoor portrait garden. Pixels on Paper photographs, engagements and weddings, brides, and special events and portraits of all kinds in our Wilkesboro, NC studio. We would be honored to meet with you, learn about you and your family and be a part of taking special portraits that will become, we hope, family heirlooms.
Bonnie Hostetler and Amanda Walling met at their local neighborhood hangout one “beautiful fall day” and before long were in love.
Ain’t it the way?
One minute you’re hanging out with friends and the next you’re planning to spend the rest of your life – build a life, in fact – with someone who’s upended the cart you were peddling and made you crazy happy. They told us that they knew they were going to be an us “over Dim Sum brunch and mimosas.”
Bonnie & Amanda are one of those couples we want to hang out with on a regular basis. In fact Ryan and I have tried and we’re still trying. They love rambling around in the mountains and great outdoors in the camper they’ve nick-named the “Wallabago.” They’re adventuresome, athletic and they’re foodies. We met them to discuss their wedding and knew immediately that we’d all be friends and that we definitely wanted to shoot their wedding this fall.
The pair told us that not only are they excited about seeing all of their friends and family in one place for the weekend but jazzed about the celebration itself. While they aren’t writing their own vows, they’ve found a saying that fits their relationship perfectly and close friends are transporting an arbor that they built and used for their own wedding and are loaning to Amanda and Bonnie for their day. The details are coming together.
Theirs is a relationship completely grounded in trust and we find it more than a little sweet that the song they said would describe them is “You’re the reason I come home” by Ron Pope. Their favorite place to be together is their “Wallabago” – a home on wheels.
During a recent trip to Charleston to celebrate Misty’s birthday, we caught up with Amanda & Bonnie and photographed these engagement portraits on their own turf. The only requirement they had was for us to capture a picture of them with Amanda’s “mountain,” the Cooper River Bridge, in the background. The entire session was filled with fun and laughter which continued long after the sun set and our cameras were put away. We spent several more hours all together on a roof top bar eating Ritz crackers (another story for another time). In October, they will be married at On the Windfall in Lansing, NC among friends and family. On the Windfall has cabins where everyone can hang out and enjoy the scenery and the occasion for the weekend and then return for anniversaries and parties for many years to come.
From the shores of SC to the mountains of NC……… bring it, ladies. We can’t wait.

When we first met Megan and Jeff for their wedding consult, there was just something that seemed to click and the feeling that we really wanted to photograph their wedding. When the call came in to let us know they wanted to hire us for their Charlotte wedding photography at the Mint Museum on Randolph, we were seriously excited.
Since all of our wedding packages now come with a complimentary engagement session, the next thing to do was plan out where they wanted to go. They both loved the idea of uptown Charlotte and doing their engagement session in and around the Fourth Ward park area. The park is nice, but the surrounding areas offer up so much in the lines of scenery, texture and opportunity to have a little fun. We literally set out and walked the area, stopping at a few spots we knew we wanted to capture and at several places in between that seemed to just catch our eye. And they completely rocked it from start to finish!
The only other preference that Megan had for their session, was a night shot of the Charlotte skyline behind them. We knew just the spot! What we did not expect was the level of silliness that could be reached at the end of an engagement session as the evening cooled off after a hot day. As Megan and Jeff posed for the shot, Megan said to Jeff that he looked a little like Clark Kent. It just happened to come up that Ryan had a Superman t-shirt in the car (necessary equipment for proper photographers by the way) and Jeff agreed to do a few extra poses with Megan to round out the session. The words crazy fun come to mind.
It was an awesome afternoon/evening and we had so much fun getting to know Megan and Jeff during the session, that the day of the wedding was much smoother. Not only because we had connected on a fun level, but they learned how to pose just right and were now more comfortable with us behind the cameras. Those are the best benefits to come out of doing an engagement session with us, lots of fun and connecting to make the day of wedding photography that much better.

Kathren & Nathan wanted and engagement session close to home in North Wilkesboro near the NC mountains and Boone NC. The farm where Kathren’s mother grew up made the perfect backdrop. We luckily had an evening with no rain and a gorgeous sunset which we took full advantage of.
Their engagement photography is best described as candid and sweet. Even their dogs got in on the action! Most couples want candid engagement and wedding photos but many have a hard time knowing how to be candid in front of a photographer with the camera aimed at them. That was definitely not the case with these two, they were all about each other! We are certainly looking forward to photographing their wedding day in May of 2014!

Sarah and Jeremy were easy to love, especially when it came to their NC mountain engagement session. Their engagement photos are best described as sweet, casual, country. We spent out time together wondering from place to place around our outdoor shooting space at our Pixels On Paper photography studio in Wilkesboro NC. We later used many of their photos to create a custom guest book that they would use at the Leatherwood Mountains wedding. Keep an eye for those photos which are yet to come!
