We love the real real. Not the online consignment enterprise, although I know it’s fab – but rather, the sense that life is not airbrushed. Our Day in the Life sessions were born from that desire to capture families doing what they do without unnecessary makeup and wardrobe changes. We just blogged about how much we’re diving into this part of our business and how much we love living the real and photographing the real. Here are a few of our favorites.
Keeping it Real! Meet this little goof-ball who joined our tribe last year. Mercurial? Yup!
Here’s the baby of one of our favorite families just enjoying the tree most of us haven’t for decades.
Our photographer pals and peers, the Guerrants with their kiddos hanging out in a park was another favorite day. There was no major holiday – no one got married (pretty sure…. the kids are still under age) and they just fished and picnic’d and spent time together.
We’ve loved holiday portraits sessions, especially when kids are jazzed about Christmas.
Day in the Life and documentary style photo shoots are something to consider if you want to capture images of your family, but not worry about the posing or any stress some may feel around a portrait session. This is just fun – with photo reminders that don’t look dumb. Repeat that to yourself and call us.
We love family portraits whether they are set in the studio, the great outdoors, a specific location like the mountains or high country, or on our property in our outdoor portrait garden. Pixels on Paper photographs, engagements and weddings, brides, and special events and portraits of all kinds in our Wilkesboro, NC studio. We would be honored to meet with you, learn about you and your family and be a part of taking special portraits that will become, we hope, family heirlooms.

For this most recent portrait session with newest member Elijah, the Ellis’s wanted to be outdoors again, but the constant rain earlier this season caused us to reschedule this session three times. Mom Ashley joked that Elijah might turn two by the time the rain stopped. But as always, everything happens for a reason. When we finally got to photograph them, it was gorgeous out and Ashley’s Mom was visiting from out of state so she was able to be a part of the day. We all met up at a park in Statesville, NC where Ashley once played as a child.
This pic below cracks me up. How much would you pay to know what Elijah was thinking? He looks so suave and cute and the curls on the top of his head are just too much.
“On the road of life together.”
This photo – all of these photos – give me so much joy and hope for the future. Family continues to be the institution we all turn to the most for inspiration, comfort and hope. Cheers to the Ellis’s. Keep holding together you four. Keep chasing each other around and hugging and bonding. We hope to see you again soon.

I giggle a little every time I hear people opine that they just don’t have time for a portrait session. It’s not condescension, I promise. I understand busy. I “do” busy myself like plenty of other folks. This is life. But I also know that with a plan and a little will, you can pull off a photoshoot with you and your loved ones. Exhibit A: the Mendelson and Hon families we photographed recently.
We photographed Caroline and Andrew Mendelson’s wedding April 6, 2013. They found us through two referrals and were married in NC even though they lived in Boston at the time and still do. Caroline contacted us just a few weeks ago to find out if we were available to photograph her family along with her Mom and Dad, Mr. & Mrs. Hon while they were visiting them in NC for a week. OF COURSE, we made time in our schedule to make it happen. The sweet Mendelson family has increased by two since we last saw them 4 years ago. Big sister Julia and little Hannah were so much fun to get to watch, tickle and photograph. We loved getting to spend a few hours in Dobson, NC catching up with everyone and celebrating Mr. Hon’s birthday, which just happened to be that day. I suspect he’ll love looking back on photos of his two grand-daughters – a couple of little cupcakes – who came to celebrate with him and his wife. These latest memories will soon decorate the walls of their homes.
We do our best to accommodate requests for family portrait sessions because we know how much they matter. We’re spread out in this enormous country and time together is at a premium. Creating heirlooms for families like the Hons and Mendelson’s is our distinct pleasure.

Jaxon is all boy and loves farm life much like his big brother Luke. If he isn’t admiring the cows and playing in a wagon, he is toddling around his dad’s diesel mechanic garage or playing with tractors. I picture him behind the wheel of some amazing car years from now having both the smile to get the girls and the ability to fix the car if something happens to the engine: i.e. A Keeper!
Kristen & Matthew took advantage of our one year baby plan package when Jaxon was born. Newborn, six month, and one year photos. They chose not to include a cake smash because as it turns out, Jaxon isn’t a fan of cake yet. What they will be getting is a custom designed photo book that shows off Jaxon’s first year on Planet Earth. For our baby plan clients, we also like to bring the whole family together at the one year mark for a family portrait. Often we’ve photographed the siblings and all the growth and changes in the family are fun to see and should be chronicled, right? We love the continuance and adore the families.

I defy you to look through these photos of the Allen family without smiling. It’s not possible.
Lauren and Patrick (PA) Allen’s family has increased since we photographed their wedding, June 28th, 2014 at Lauren’s Dad’s Big Red Barn in West Jefferson NC. They’re now a family of 5, which includes PA’s older daughter who couldn’t be a part of this shoot and their daughter Kayleigh – the crazy cute brunette-slash-big-sister.
It was as if there was never a day apart for all of us. Ryan and I like to meet up with Lauren’s Dad, CJ, whenever he visits the mountains at Boondocks, our favorite drinking hole in West Jefferson. We solve the world’s problems over craft beer. On this day, we spent the entire time laughing and joking with each other. These guys were sweet enough to brings us gifts for our little man on the way and provided great advice on babies and especially baby boys. We love this growing family and are so excited to have them closer again. There will be loads to share as Cooper grows and our boy is born. We’ve already began planning Christmas portraits! I love it when God sends people back into our lives.
