There is an African proverb that goes: “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want far, go together.” Collaboration is a beautiful thing for many reasons and recently we experienced that again on the commercial side of our photography business. We were contacted by the owner of KLI – Kathryn Lily Interiors, Jody Kurtz, to photograph her designs for the interiors of a gorgeous home.
KLI collaborated with MBI, the builders of the house at the Blue Ridge Mountain Club development. We’ve photographed MBI projects in the past and when they referred Kurtz to us, we were excited to spend some time focusing on the interior design work.
For this project, Ryan was on duty and worked directly with Jody and a member of her design team, to capture their clean and elegant styling in each room. They discussed the shot list and coordinated seamlessly. Ryan said that because they knew what they wanted and stayed a room or two ahead of him, he was able to get a cache of amazing photos of the entire house in a matter of hours.
In the past, when we’ve taken architectural images for commercial use, we’ve focused on the construction and craftsman aspects of the build, things like cabinetry, countertops, exteriors, decks, custom fireplaces and so on. For this shoot there was shift in focus on the finishes that Kathryn Lily Interiors put into that space. There are shots that show off the overall space, but also more intimate photos of certain design aspects, textures, color patterns and overall balance. Ryan loved working with the KLI team and appreciated the organization and creativity of that partnership and collaboration. Beautiful results in the home and in the images.

One of the joys – and believe me there are many – of being a photographer is seeing something happen with a client that you had no idea about. Do you follow? Sometimes, you’re taking family photos of a couple with their first child and discover later that the second is on the way. Or a family has gathered at a reunion and later, when a beloved member has passed, we all realize that the photos were the last. Time moves.
This is not that story though. This is business and a wonderful one at that. We photographed Ashley and Oscar’s wedding last year and fell in love with them and their story. Now, Ashley has created Orozco’s Christian Craft Shop and you can find them and Ashley’s amazing specialty work on Facebook.

The collaboration between Chetola Recreation Sporting Reserve and the Blue Ridge Mountain Club is a smart and fairly seamless one. “On 67 acres of rural rolling terrain, among towering pines, red maples, and mighty oaks, and surrounded by the incredible Blue Ridge vistas in the heart of the gated Blue Ridge Mountain Club, lies Chetola Sporting Reserve. The private club, open exclusively to those with annual memberships or lodging guests at Chetola Resort, features an array of outdoor sportsman activities including gun, rifle and pistol ranges, sporting clay course, 5-stand clay station, archery range, and fly fishing. All activities are led by NRA-certified instructors specialized in a particular discipline, with customized Churchill-style instruction based on each guest’s proficiencies and needs.”
What Ryan and I saw was the usual amazing work from the minds at MBI Builders. It is an absolutely gorgeous timber frame lodge for the members and guests of the Resort and Club to enjoy and perfectly situated with beautiful views and area to practice your marksmanship.

American forefather Benjamin Franklin famously said, “Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.” This isn’t actually true. What he wrote was, “Behold the rain which descends from heaven upon our vineyards, there it enters the roots of the vines, to be changed into wine, a constant proof that God loves us, and loves to see us happy.”
What is true is that both rain and beer can put a smile on our faces, and one place that handles the beer part is Boondocks Brewing Taproom and Restaurant. These guys have been open since August 1, 2012, which makes today their 4th anniversary! Well done, team.
It’s a 40 minute drive for us, but it’s our neighborhood spot because we love them, they love us, the food is fab and the craft beer is exceptional. And while “boondocks” means out-of-the-way, backwood, or rural, the set up the Boondocks Brew Haus, just down from the restaurant on South Jefferson Avenue, is all modern. They just updated the brew system a week ago to a larger one and it is sleek, sophisticated and state of the art. Equally cool is that everything about the brew system was customized, from the piping, the control panel, motor/pump mounting all the way down to the Boondocks logo on the lids for the tanks.
Because we consider owner Gary Brown, head chef/general manager Jared Yelton and the staff family, we offered to help with the installation of the new equipment. When we arrived however, all the heavy lifting of getting the 3 new large tanks in place had already happened. Gary was still doing some fitting work so we stayed a little while to take some photos to help document the history of the installation, even getting a couple “proud poppa” photos with Gary at the tanks.
The brew haus is responsible for creating the amazing craft beer for the restaurant, but the space is also open for events like monthly beer and wine dinners, private functions, rehearsal dinners and family reunions. The gang at Boondocks is very active in the Ashe County community, as well, supporting local farms and hosting events. They were just awarded the Ashe County Small Business of the Year award for 2016. Finally, manager and chef Jared came to the Pixels anniversary party in 2015 and provided appetizers and cooked other items on site. We just love these guys and are raising a glass to them. Here’s to many more years of making people happy. CHEERS!
We love family portraits whether they are set in the studio, the great outdoors, a specific location like the mountains or high country, or on our property in our outdoor portrait garden. Pixels on Paper photographs babies and kids, engagements and weddings, brides and special events and portraits of all kinds in our Wilkesboro, NC studio. We would be honored to meet with you, learn about you and your family and be a part of taking special portraits that will become, we hope, family heirlooms.
We found the most amazing house and put in an offer. Then we remembered that we already have an amazing house. Then we remembered that these are clients of ours who’ve we photographed for years. Check out Brushy Mountain Dental in Wilkesboro, NC.
Can you imagine working here? Well we have for various shoots and it’s a fantastic location. Brushy Mountain Dental provides a service we all take for granted (and need and may be putting off – – just saying) in one of the coolest offices we’ve ever seen. They’ve built a business with people they trust for people they care about – their clients – and they’ve been at it for nearly 15 years.
Pixels started photographing their office and staff several years ago and created a gallery for their website, social media and office.
