This summer, Ryan and I are working, of course. But we’re also “having a summer” and so far it has been filled with some travel, 2 birthdays, a storm that sent tree limbs through the roof of our 100+ year old house and watching our small but mighty (MIGHTY, I SAY) garden yield glorious veggies. Here are some highlights (and lowlights). We love you guys. Hope your summers are safe and fun and plentiful, as well.
Late July and the garden keeps giving.
Our summer has also included a usual southern visitor – storms. North Carolina (both the piedmont and mountains) have seen daily thunderstorms in the afternoons and evenings for days on end and often with the fanfare of thunder and lightening as well. I love what rain does to our garden, but the more harsh storms in Wilkes County have been doozies. One in particular, in early July hit the Pixels homestead. Our neighbors were without power and sustained lots of damage. I thank God for a sturdy husband, no loss of power, crews ready to come in and no personal injuries. It could have been worse, but it wasn’t.
Food, storms, repair, recovery and …… birthdays. We both have summer birthdays and celebrated with great food and time together away from deadlines.
Of course, we’ve been wandering and spending time with friends as well.
We love to travel all over the states, but southern summers are pretty wonderful. We’re grateful for each other, for our family, friends and clients, for getting to do what we love and for 4 seasons and all they bring with them. Autumn is still “a ways off,” so we’re going to stay in the good company of summer for now.
We love family portraits whether they are set in the studio, the great outdoors, a specific location like the mountains or high country, or on our property in our outdoor portrait garden. Pixels on Paper photographs babies and kids, engagements and weddings, brides and special events and portraits of all kinds in our Wilkesboro, NC studio. We would be honored to meet with you, learn about you and your family and be a part of taking special portraits that will become, we hope, family heirlooms.
These guys use only the good notes.
If it’s your cup of tea (or whiskey) to go to a live local show, then you need to see the Grievous Angels Band. We ADORE them and were honored to photograph a performance of theirs. They’ve got some fab photos from fans and friends, but wanted a few more for promotional use and we threw our equipment in the car and sped their way. Do you like American music, vocals that range from gravelly to crazy smooth, guitars, guitars, guitars with texture, folk, rock and a confluence of talent, grace, mischief, energy and a pure force that brings you back to earth? These guys are for you, … and when we say guys, we mean guys (precisely 5) and one gal – Alicia – nicknamed “the Pistol.” Any woman who can elbow her way into that mix is a mighty thing and Alicia is mighty. The photos for this session were taken in February of this year at Summit Coffee in Davidson where they perform regularly. As with all truly good live music, the vibe was raw and fun and we loved focusing on each band member. The Grievous Angels, by the way, are Joe Ciarlante, Tim Farney, Richard McDevitt, Reid Cathcart, Jim Gamble and Alicia Akima R Driver.
Pixels loves photographing musicians, as you know, and would love to do so for your band, group, ensemble, trio or musical tribe. We’re looking forward to Merlefest in a mere 4 weeks.

It’s nearly prom season, people. Do you hear me?? PROM SEASON.
Do you remember yours? Most of us sweated over asking someone or being asked, finding the right dress or renting a tux, where to go before and after, borrowing the family car or renting a limo. Maybe you got ready with friends and double dated or you had a steady boy or girlfriend to plan with. Well, maybe you have teens in the throws of these Big Decisions and we’re here to help. This group of glamorous and hammy students (and certified pals) from Wilkes Early College High School decided to do it up right with a photo session at our studio.
Needless to say, with regard to feeling and tone, it was a dead heat between glamour and silliness. We loved watching them interact both in the studio and in our outdoor portrait garden. They were clearly excited and it brought back memories for us. At Pixels we talk a lot about creating memories, but honestly that is the point afterall if you do what we do. We are not overseas in a war zone or chasing stories for the media. But we are blessed to be documenting moments — moments that our clients will look back on with fondness, laughter, the “Oh my Lord – look at my hair!” facial expressions and all the while recounting the memories attached to each shot.
We hope this crew feels this way about their pics. “We love these.” “One day I’ll show these to my own kids…. maybe.”
Studio photos for prom start at only $55 per person. Grab your date or a group of pals and let us create and capture your 2015 prom. Now’s the time!
We photographed a Bride’s portrait session at the Church family home a year earlier. The Bride’s family and theirs were close family friends. Since they saw how “magical” their woods looked in the Bride’s photos they began planning an outdoor family portrait session of their own with us. We photographed these images back in the Fall when their home and surrounding land was gorgeous with North Carolina Fall foliage (sorry Blogging in a timely fashion for us is so hard). We agree, their woods really do look magical. We enjoyed photographing the Church family and are grateful for the opportunity to create these heirlooms for their entire family.

Its encouraging to know that in a time where the statistics on marriages seems to be so negative, that there can be examples of how it really can work and be a life long journey. We were blessed this summer to not only capture one 50th wedding anniversary, but to be able to photograph two!
It has always been fun to see how much love a newlywed couple can have for each other on the day of the wedding, but when you get to see that same emotion 50 years later, it touches your heart in a whole new way.
Brenda and Jerry Waddell were the first of our silver anniversary family portraits this summer in Wilkesboro, NC. As a gift to them their family organized and paid for family portraits. They not only wanted portraits with each other, but also took the opportunity to have outdoor family portraits with their children, grand-children, and the latest addition to the growing family, their great-grand daughter. It is simply amazing to see what hard work (because marriage takes lots of hard work), praying for each other and a great sense of love at all times will get you. This family has been such a blessing to us in more than one way and we are honored to be a part of their lives.
Our second anniversary outdoor family photos was for Wilhelmina and Harold Wood who celebrated 50 years of marriage in June. We were delighted to go to their historic farm house in the NC Mountains and spend time with them while they told stories of how they made their marriage work. The house made for a wonderful significant backdrop and provided the opportunity for them to relive fond memories with us of raising their daughters, working on the farm, and taking care of each other. Misty and the Wood’s youngest daughter Melinda were friends all through elementary and high school so this couple were especially precious.
The opportunity to celebrate marriage in all that we do certainly does not stop after the wedding day when the wedding photography is over. As photographers we love being a fixture in the lives of all of our clients and are truly honored when we can be the photographer that captures memories years after they say I do. We look forward to the day when we can photograph life’s moments both big and small for all of them, including celebrating momentous anniversaries.
