This was a fun shoot for a number of reasons. Madi was excited on this day. She was dressed as a bride for the first time completely and the trial run was sort of her first opportunity to feel all bride-y. She was practically jumping out of her skin.
Secondly, this young woman is an only child, which I “get” entirely. I am one too and watching her mom get chocked up during the session took me back. Her mom shed tears multiple times and made me think about my own mom – how critical that relationship is and how much we’ve shared and will share in the years ahead. I loved watching them relate as bride and mother of the bride – that mix of unbridled excitement and nostalgia.
Madi chose well in Preston. He’s a great guy and their engagement portraits and the questionnaire they completed for us showed how in sync they are – and how funny. Here’s to many, many great years ahead and to gorgeous summer brides.

Katie Vance loves Disney Princesses and Patrick Carlson is a computer engineer and self proclaimed geek. Together they are absolutely perfect for each other and their wedding was perfect too. Perfect location, perfect weather, lots of sentiment and love, laughter and tears. It’s what you hope for when you decide not to elope.
From the tiaras and sparkling purple sneakers to the roses under glass centerpieces, Disney – and specifically The Beauty and the Beast – was on display when these two said their vows at Leatherwood Mountain Resort (and a BIG shout out to our friends there). We loved getting outdoor shots of all the flowers and purple sashes, the smiling friends and family and the many details, including Patrick’s boutonniere which contained a circuit board and wire. He really is a computer geek and we’re allowed to say that because he said it first!
The couple told us that their favorite moments were the toasts from the maid of honor and best man, watching Katie’s dad try to keep it together while dancing with her and Patrick dancing with his mom. Family and friends from all over and from various cultural backgrounds came to Leatherwood to celebrate with these two and boy did they ever. The dance floor was jumping. The DJ and vendors they chose are listed at the end of this blog and everyone worked well together to keep the stress to a minimum — something Katie shared with us that she was so grateful for.
Katie arrived to walk down the aisle and the couple departed in Katie’s Dad’s classic muscle car, a Supersport Nova. Not bad, huh?

Author and environmentalist Rick Bass has a great quote about the seasons of life:
“My life, I realize suddenly, is July. Childhood is June, and old age is August,
but here it is, July, and my life, this year, is July inside of July.”
For each of these couples, in their year, in July, they were in the beginning of their new lives. Childhood was June. But they were entering the July inside of July.
From Jessica and Jason, who were married in 2016, to Precious and Damon who’ve been married for 9 years, we hope that for the best and longest Julys in their lives. August can wait. Keep celebrating. Keep enjoying each other. Keep planting and harvesting, knowing how loved you are. Happy Anniversary, all of you!
The wedding, on April 22nd at The Inn at Crestwood Resort in Blowing Rock NC, between Lance and Fiona Martin was the perfect springtime event: kilt, weather, laid-back bride and all. The couple had a small and intimate gathering of friends and family from all over the country and different parts of the world, including friends from Switzerland and Scotland. Only one bridesmaid and one groomsmen were in the wedding party. Each detail was well planned, but when it came to the day, they just trusted everything to go smoothly and as planned. And it did, including the brief arrival of sunshine for a period.
Weather can be dodgy in April, so Fiona wisely chose to have the event indoors. Good thing too, because the Scottish inspired clouds were out and it did rain. Fortunately, it cleared long enough for photos. Even during the ceremony and reception though, the views from the windows were spectacular with Grandfather Mountain in the distance. They could not have chosen a more fitting spot for a groom in Scottish attire and a bride who looked like a Celtic Fairy.Even though the couple are from South Carolina, they are serious cyclists and choose the Inn at Crestwood because of their love for the area. They’ve cycled in this area many, many times and so it was no surprise that they towed their bikes with them for their wedding weekend. The day before the ceremony, they went for a long road ride together along the Blue Ridge Parkway. But I wasn’t kidding about how serious they are as cyclists. To share their love of it with everyone, the couple gave water bottles and bicycle bottle openers as favors to guests.Brides come in all types and temperaments, and Fiona is easily one of the most laid-back relaxed brides we have ever worked with. Her trust in all of her chosen vendors allowed everyone to be relaxed; each of us, from photographers to caterers, were able to take care of them and provide the best service. It’s refreshing when clients have complete trust in your work and don’t give you a list of specifics that sometimes hamper creativity.Lance and Fiona shared that a few of the highlights were when Lance choked up during the ceremony, that they were able to chat with guests out on the patio before the reception started and when the dance floor flooded with ALL the guests who wanted to dance to a song by Average White Band. The reception was a real party!Congrats to these two! We look forward to wishing them a Happy Anniversary this time next year.

“We’re pretty much obsessed with each other,” they told us and I personally consider that a good sign if you’re going to marry someone.
These two lovebirds are a couple we adore. We’ve known them for a while due to the fact that we photographed groom-to-be Preston Roberts’ sister Meghann for her bridal portraits and stunning wedding. The family adopted us and WE LET THEM! We love, love, love this family and feel like we belong. So when Madison Ball and Preston became engaged, Madi booked us before she even knew the date of their wedding. Both teachers, Madi and Preston are recent college grads – she from UNC-Charlotte and he from Appalachian – and they fell in love beginning with a funny Instagram message that led to a series of texted videos of Preston playing the guitar and singing for her. That was 2 years ago. Since then, they’ve been living 2 hours apart, so when they’re together, they love to float on the river, duck hunt in Arkansas, go to App football games or to the beach and just crack each other up. These two are fun and funny, so we don’t have any trouble believing they enjoy time together and are going to have a successful marriage filled with lots of laughter.Photographing Madi and Preston in various beauty spots around West Jefferson NC in the mountains of the High Country was a breeze because it was so completely relaxed and gave us a chance between set-ups to catch up on life and family. The couple will be married in July on the family farm, the same place we photographed Preston’s sister’s bridal portraits. They have no plans for establishing any new traditions at their ceremony they say, but they are excited about first seeing each other when Madi walks down the proverbial aisle at their intimate wedding. We look forward to their mid-summer wedding and to seeing the family again and watching these two call it legal. Let the countdown begin and congrats on the journey ahead, you guys!
We love family portraits whether they are set in the studio, the great outdoors, a specific location like the mountains or high country, or on our property in our outdoor portrait garden. Pixels on Paper photographs, engagements and weddings, brides, and special events and portraits of all kinds in our Wilkesboro, NC studio. We would be honored to meet with you, learn about you and your family and be a part of taking special portraits that will become, we hope, family heirlooms.
