Christmas Portraits | Welcome Home

Misty 1976

We’re doing something different with our holiday portrait sessions this year. We’re bringing them home. As in to YOUR home. It’s where you live and it’s where the magic and memories live too. Photographs tell the story and evoke all the memories of the season even as they are frozen forever in that specific time. It only made sense to take your family portraits in the place you call home.

Misty 1978 – Gifts for my girlie AND my rugged side.

Let’s be honest: isn’t half the fun of old family photographs saying, “remember that couch? remember that carpet?” Or “that was our first year in that house and you insisted on having a mini-tree in your room.” Every family on earth looks at past Christmas photos and has these conversations, in reverie and laughter.

Misty 1981 – future Merlefest attendee and Official Photographer, thank you very much!

Ryan 1982 & 1986 with brothers and sister. LOVE the pjs. Sports, super heros and Little House on the Prairie.

Place matters, but so does family, so here’s the origin of this idea: We’ve had holiday portrait sessions at our Pixels indoor studio for years with great success, but this year, I could never settle on a theme I liked. Thinking through it all now, God was definitely showing me why. I wasn’t listening or obeying what he was leading me to do. Finally, about a week ago and after much discussion with Ryan and some fear, I listened and obeyed. I sent an email to a client who has always participated in and anticipated our Christmas sessions. Here’s an excerpt:

Because you inquired early regarding information about Christmas portraits and we’ve photographed yours for years, I’m writing to share my idea for Christmas photos. For us, this year has been hectic, challenging and rewarding all at the same time. Through it all I’ve been very reflective and God has been incredibly forthcoming in showing me direction and insight all along the way both in my personal journey and the path of our business. I want all the work we do to be done with intention and relevance.
Nothing is more important during the holidays (or anytime for that matter) than family. When trying to create the concept for this year’s Christmas theme “family” and “home” continued to resonate in my mind. I wanted a way to create a personal experience for each of our clients, so my resolution is to offer in-home Christmas sessions.
I want to capture families gathered around trees with handmade ornaments, trees where all the fragile ornaments are at a height away from little fingers, stockings are personalized and tree toppers are those that have been passed through generations. I’d love to capture children in their Christmas PJs while they show me an ornament they made at school. Children years from now will recognize their surroundings in a photograph. What it looks like is different for every single one of our clients.

Family Photos from the Porch | Welcome to the Community

The intersection of the Barnes family with the story of another young boy, Drake, who is battling cystic fibrosis can only happen when there is community. Ryan and I care very much about ours and we put our money where are mouths are as often as possible. For the 3rd consecutive year, we’ve donated a family portrait session to a silent auction for Drake, more specifically the Drives for Drake Charity. In 2014, the VanMeter family were the recipients and we shot photos of 3 generations on their horse farm. The Barnes were the winners from last fall’s auction and we took their photos in May of this year. Their young sons, coincidentally, are around the same age as Drake.

The flag colored bunting helps, but between the house, the landscape and the boys’ scrubbed faces, it made for a fairly Rockwellian type of Americana. If you close your eyes, you can almost hear July 4th fireworks.Wilkesbor NC photographers outdoor family portrait photos by Pixels On Paper photo Wilkesbor NC photographers outdoor family portrait photos by Pixels On Paper photo

We wrapped up the session with a view of the sunset on the putting green at Oakwoods Country Club where “Drives Fore Drake” takes place, bringing the day and that sense of community full circle. While the Barneses are still new to Wilkes, we hope that inaugurating this chapter with photos, especially ones earned through charity, will make this place feel more like home for them. Welcome, you guys! We hope to see you around and take photos of your family as the boys grow and you all become more a part of the community.

jaxon arrives just when we need something “BIG”

Newborn photography Wilkesboro NC Pixels On Paper Photographers photo

Sweet Jaxon… Hello, from all of us and welcome, young pup. Your parents are so happy you’re here. And so is your older brother, Luke, although he may alternately hug and pummel you for the next 18-23 years. Luke was ALLLL about you during your very first portrait session, but experience shows us that you may borrow something of his when you’re 10 or 12 years old and really make him mad and then, well, don’t blame us if there’s a rumble. Of course you could end up being like the Wright Brothers or the Gershwins and do something big, but I digress.
Below are your feet and they’re pretty perfect. That’s a good start.

Jaxon, you were born on July 21st and 6 days later, your sweet parents carried you into our studios where you were an absolute dream to photograph. You slept like a champ, took only a few little snack breaks and were as sweet as humanly possible. Your name, Jaxon, means “God has been gracious,” and He has been.
I would give my kingdom to know what you’re thinking about in this pic below. It’s the smile of a man who already knows something big is waiting just down the road.Newborn photography Wilkesboro NC Pixels On Paper Photographers photo

Newborn photography Wilkesboro NC Pixels On Paper Photographers photoNewborn photography Wilkesboro NC Pixels On Paper Photographers photoThere’s a great story about 2 brothers talking, both grown men, and one is getting ready for an important event in his life … a big, BIG day. His brother asks, “so are you ready?” And he responds, “Yep. It’s either going to be a HUGE success or a COMPLETE disaster,” and his brother smiles and says, “good!”
When the time comes, and you and Luke (and any other siblings who may come along in your tribe) are cheering each other on, remember that. Support the BIG gesture. I’m personally sick of the phrase “go big or go home,” but the sentiment is right on.
Dream big, succeed big, play big, reach out in big ways and if you’re going to fail, then fail trying to accomplish something that matters to you. Don’t just get by. Don’t phone it in. Look at that picture of you smirking knowingly and swing for the fences.
And good luck, dude. We’ll be watching with interest.

Family reunion outdoor portraits in Roaring Gap, NC

What is a LARGE family?
What’s the threshold between, “is this IT?” and “if I don’t get 30 minutes alone, I’m going to ugly cry?”
Muse amongst yourselves, but while at it, meet the Hobens. Every year, they vacation in Roaring Gap, NC at a home that has been in one of the son-in-law’s families for many generations. 2 parents + their 3 children + their spouses and then their children. 16 total traveled from Atlanta GA, Charlotte NC, and Winchester, VA for the July 4th holiday weekend. And we were invited! Spoiler alert: there were no tears. Loads of laughs, but no crying.

They were all a bit nervous and excited to have us since their last family portrait was taken nearly 8 years ago when the youngest grandchild was still an infant. Fortunately, this is not our first rodeo and we blended in and put them at ease, having fun, making jokes and of course picking on the teenagers. Roaring Gap NC family outdoor portrait photos by Pixels On Paper Wilkesboro NC Photographers photoRoaring Gap NC family outdoor portrait photos by Pixels On Paper Wilkesboro NC Photographers photo Before long everyone was laughing, relaxed and picking out more ideal backdrops around the home-place for the many group photos. Out and about the day after we photographed this family we ran into them again and they complimented us on how comfortable they were and how much fun was had. The husbands in particular noted how they despise having their photo taken but were relaxed with us and looking forward to seeing the pictures. That’s a great feeling and one of the best compliments!Roaring Gap NC family outdoor portrait photos by Pixels On Paper Wilkesboro NC Photographers photoRoaring Gap NC family outdoor portrait photos by Pixels On Paper Wilkesboro NC Photographers photoRoaring Gap NC family outdoor portrait photos by Pixels On Paper Wilkesboro NC Photographers photoRoaring Gap NC family outdoor portrait photos by Pixels On Paper Wilkesboro NC Photographers photoRoaring Gap NC family outdoor portrait photos by Pixels On Paper Wilkesboro NC Photographers photoRoaring Gap NC family outdoor portrait photos by Pixels On Paper Wilkesboro NC Photographers photoRoaring Gap NC family outdoor portrait photos by Pixels On Paper Wilkesboro NC Photographers photoRoaring Gap NC family outdoor portrait photos by Pixels On Paper Wilkesboro NC Photographers photoRoaring Gap NC family outdoor portrait photos by Pixels On Paper Wilkesboro NC Photographers photo
