Angelina Turns One – Cake Smash Photos

This juicy fruit of a baby is Angelina and I’m astonished that she’s now a year old! I remember shooting maternity images of her expectant and excited parents and it feels like moments ago. Parents Jessica and Bobby Bennett are two of the most fun people I’ve photographed in the last year plus.

Angelina has been cute since day one and I would know. She made it to our studio not long after she was born (and she arrived three weeks early!) and was a deliciously juicy little newborn bundle then. For her six month portraits, we all met up at our favorite orchard and captured her underneath the pink blossoms.

For her first birthday, we were back in the studio with a luau theme, lots of bright colors, pineapples, props, costume changes, and of course, a cake to destroy – I mean nibble. Angelina was so easy to work with and loved her outfits and the icing she sampled. I love these full circle one year moments! Happy Birthday, Sweet Angelina!!

Pixels on Paper – An Intro

“Please allow me to introduce myself.” A great Rolling Stones song begins that way and I’m running with it. The doldrums of January and February need tweaking into shape.

The more I watch the world shift and watch social media bind us together (and tear us apart ….), I see how some of us are working to find each other – maybe even find each other again – through simple introductions. Introductions are a beautiful thing. So consider this a brief online How Do You Do.

For those of you who may not know, there we are – on our wedding day in fact, August 2, 2003. Ryan Case is my husband, my best friend, my houseman, my baby-daddy, my darling, my co-conspirator and the man I run this business with. Pixels was born of shared interests and talents and a desire to work for myself. Want to know a little more about what fuels us? Here you go!

Ryan is a fabulous and skilled photographer, graphic designer and work horse. Great with tools, remodeling our century old house, and not at all shabby in the kitchen, he’s a keeper. I am a photographer, book lover, soft touch, explorer of moods and lighting, gardener, and always down for a newborn baby portrait session, and a nap (in no particular order). I believe in prayer and outdoor concerts.

Together, we are Pixels on Paper Photography and Graphic Design and have been since 2005. We love to work and play, travel and camp. We celebrate creativity, sound and music (c’mon MERLEFEST!!), families and their specific milestones and we are dedicated to being a part of our community.

In 2015, we threw a big 10th Anniversary Party with friends and family, something that we were unable to do in 2020 for our 15th. But we’ve been so pleased that over the last 15 years, our business has grown and changed.

Newborns and One Year Packages

For parents-to-be, the one year package allows us to capture images during the first two weeks, at 6 months and the first birthday portraits. These have become our favorites and families love them too. That first year flies by.

Families

From Day in the Life sessions to family reunions to gatherings to mark special occasions, we embrace family photography. I would encourage you to search our blog under family to see the breadth of our work over the years.

Commercial Work

We cover the commercial side of photography as well as the more personal and Ryan handles graphic design too. We love supporting small businesses and local ventures.

Personal Growth

The addition of our son Finley changed so much for us and if you need a fix of cute pics of a pretty adorable ginger, follow us on social media. This little boy manages to keep us young.

More than anything, our goal is to capture forever those moments in our own lives, the moments in the life of a business, a community, and those fleeting moments in a family. As our business has changed (we only do very special requested weddings these days), these values continue to be a guiding light. If you have a milestone or just a notion for a photo shoot and would like to discuss it, we would be honored. We’re always for a bigger party, a full table and lots of connections.

The Look of Love – Photos of Parents

While I’m in the “focus on love” mood that I’m in, I’m moving from couples to parents. These are some of my favorite types of photo shoots. I love taking newborn, 6 month and one year baby photos. What make these shoots even more special is knowing that I’m getting photos of parents that they would never get on their own. The looks on their faces as they really take in their child are just priceless.

Before they’ve said their first words, we parents are already projecting qualities and stories and hopes onto our kids. But in these moments, they are such pure potential.

As parents, we know, you guys. We know how quickly time passes and how children – especially babies – change daily. If you’re expecting a newborn or want to gather your family pod for a portrait session, Pixels would love to make that happen.

Sofia Turns One

Wrapping up a full year baby package meant that we got to see little Miss Sofia again just a few weeks ago. I cannot believe these newborns I welcome to our studio are now no longer new earthlings. I understand the concept of time and who DOESN’T want this year to be over but still…… you cannot stop a baby from just doing its thing and growing!

We photographed Sofia’s newborn sessions with her siblings and 6 month “Milk Bath” portraits in our studio and this one was in our portrait garden. This may be a first – hosting the family and baby each time in our Pixels space vs. meeting the family at another location.

Mom Jessica is a nurse and did not want a cake smash but definitely wanted to be outside, and that worked for us, because that’s how we roll during Covid-19. Sofia got new outfits for this day due to unseasonably warm weather. She was absolutely adorable and even mom got into a few of the shots.

I had already been hoarding fall and Halloween props, so I set up the portrait garden with pumpkins we grew in our pumpkin patch, mums and other little props, and off we went.

We will be creating a one year photo album for this family and I am really looking forward to it. Sofia: take your time with the growing up bit, please.

Newborn Baby Gracelynn

Gracelynn is a new citizen of Planet Earth. First time parents Caitlin and Matthew Triplett brought her to our studio, along with first time grandparents – all socially distancing and crying. It’s part of the gig… taking pictures and watching happy tears. Tears are welcome, you guys, I mean it. If there was ever something to celebrate in a time of uncertainty, it’s new life.

This perfect little girl barely slept during the session, and while that can sometimes be an issue with babies who cannot get comfy easily, Gracelynn was just as eager to be cozy and camera-ready as any newborn I’ve ever seen. It didn’t matter what position I put her in, she was “thumbs up” and ready to pose.

A few months ago, I photographed the Triplett’s maternity portrait session. Grandmother Tabitha is a friend of mine and reached out to make that session happen after the family experienced several losses in a short amount of time. Gracelynn is the antidote for that pain and loss, bringing with her hope, light and joy.

These photos are going to hang in both Caitlin and Matthew’s house and Tabitha’s as well. Before we even started the shoot, we discussed wall arrangements, so I was already familiar with the rooms themselves in both houses, what they wanted, their wishes, color palettes and themes.

For Caitlyn, the gallery/collection will be made up of maternity and newborn portraits with 6 month and 1 year portraits to come.

For Grandma Tabitha’s home, we are creating an entire wall made up of images of Gracelynn, Caitlynn and Matthew, and Tabitha’s other child Zach. When we are able, we will take family portraits of everyone together. I am so looking forward to that.

I felt a calling once again during this shoot to do this type of photography. New moms need whispered prayers, encouragement and a reminder that what they are doing is right. I think we forget how anxiety-producing it is to bring home a teeny human who needs absolutely everything. Being a loving and stable presence, even during a few hours for a portrait session, or for a year of sessions, gives me the opportunity to share a little love and support. I’m grateful for this.
