pixels on paper’s favorite newborn portraits (well some of them)

Dr. Seuss would have been 112 years old on March 2 and “Oh, The Places You’ll Go” remains one of the most given books to kids of all ages. When we looked over the newborn photos we’ve taken to chose our favorites, I kept thinking about their perfect faces. The world hasn’t happened to them yet and THEY have not happened to the world. YET. So, here’s to Dr. Seuss, the great and wondrous unknown, and the impact these little creatures will have on the world. “KID, YOU’LL MOVE MOUNTAINS!”

Today is your day.

You’re off and away!

It’s opener there

newborn pictures of sawyer jane at 2 weeks charm the pants off the jury

The cat who ate the canary. Seriously, she just knocked off her 3rd bank. Or more likely, her minions did it and just called to let her know that the funds have been successfully transferred into her account off the Cayman Islands. And there’s a cell phone somewhere buried in all of that cotton. She’s sittin’ on it. And laughing at all of us. LOOK AT THAT FACE!!! Who would convict her? Not me.Sawyer Sherill Newborn Photography by Pixels On Paper Portrait Photography photoThis perfect little imp, this little stealer of hearts, is Sawyer Jane. Great name, right? We took these photos in our portrait studio in Wilkesboro, North Carolina and the truth about this photo is that I had no hand in getting her to look right at me and grin like that. I just let the lens do it’s thing and knew when to pull the trigger. Her grandmother and mom, Jamie both marveled at that shot above and I just smiled, shook my head and said, “I had nothing to do with it. God is better than I deserve and he equips me with what I need every day.”
Sawyer Sherill Newborn Photography by Pixels On Paper Portrait Photography photoSawyer Sherill Newborn Photography by Pixels On Paper Portrait Photography photoSo here’s a little thing about taking portraits of newborns: you have to have lots and lots of patience. The photographer has to have it, the parents have to have it. It’s just the way it is. An average newborn session can take 3-4 hours and not all of that time is spent in front of the camera. It’s mostly time spent feeding, changing, burping, soothing, and getting the little one back to sleep.
Sawyer Sherill Newborn Photography by Pixels On Paper Portrait Photography photoWhat always sticks with me and makes me smile and empathize is that every parent thinks their baby performed terribly or won’t show well in the finished photos. They worry that their baby cried too much or didn’t show personality or whatever. And a phrase I’ve heard 1000 times if I’ve heard it once is, “we just hope that you got one or two good ones.” I hear it all the time. The fun part is that they show back up for our PreView saying that very same thing right up until the moment I start the slideshow. They’re overcome with emotion in seeing all the great photos of their sweet baby. Jamie, along with every other mom, has that moment of “awwwwww. Oh my gosh, LOOK!!!” To say it’s rewarding is this week’s understatement.

Sawyer Sherill Newborn Photography by Pixels On Paper Portrait PhotographySawyer Sherill Newborn Photography by Pixels On Paper Portrait Photography photoJamie and Dad Joe were newlyweds and then – BAM! – this little robber showed up. I love photos of parents cradling their newborns, especially the first born. The whole thing is rife with excitement, awe, natural worry, tenderness and all the fresh outrageousness that teeny humans bring with them to the world. I say this a lot but I mean it every time: we love watching the growth of newlyweds into solid marriages, marriages into families, babies into kids and the multiplication of love in each of those transitions. We’ve added Sawyer Jane, Jamie and Joe to that category.

son’s nautical 1st birthday portraits + all boy and all flirt

Proud parents, Traci and Andy, do nothing by halves. Why should any parent when it comes to a first birthday photos, but these two especially love props, fun outfits and themes. Their son, Holden, has been a client of ours since birth (his mom sets his appointments; she’s so organized like that), and like his parents, we love pulling out the stops for each of his sessions.

We captured this mini celebration in our outdoor portrait garden and there was lots and lots of color, say nothing of Holden’s personality.
All during Holden’s first year on this spinning marble, his portraits have kept to the travel theme. His newborn session centered on aviation (click the link and see him in his little Charles Lindbergh knit cap).

dreams of flight ….

For his first birthday, the theme was nautical. Blues and oranges, whales and anchors. And that little jumper with the anchor on it? Good Lord. It’s a classic. Mothers everywhere would swoon over such a throwback.

Holden is a big flirt. According to his Mom, he turns on the charm in front of ladies and knows how to draw in a crowd at church. People love to spoil him rotten. He was a smiling new baby, just days old in front of our lens (see photo above), a grinning 6 month old and he continues to up the ante at 1. It’s always been easy to get a grin out of him. So, child photographer’s dream?? Definitely.
Like most boys, Holden enjoyed smashing his cake more than tasting it. He was messy and mobile, cracking up and clambering around every set up.

8 month old’s studio baby portraits + a little “dress up”

We photographed Madelyn’s (well, Maddie’s) newborn portraits earlier this year and somehow she’s managed to get cuter, her expressions more animated, her eyes more blue and her parents, Valerie and Jason, more delighted. In fact, they should probably just keep us on retainer.

Her newborn session was a complete joy, because she’s just so perfect. I say that knowing the bias is evident, so full disclosure: this little lamb is my second cousin.

Her mouth is almost always open, either in the biggest smile or because she’s chattering away. I foresee a lucrative contract in her future …. and most likely with an opera company or any advertiser looking for a child who expresses a constant, persistent joy.

Her eyes are unbelievable and we’ve dubbed them the McGuire eyes. Those big blues are hereditary. Her dad and granddad, my own dad and I ALL have them. Suffice it to say that photographing her is an exercise in seeing how many photos are NOT close ups. And those cheeks! Those cheeks power that smiling and laughing mouth.

baby’s one year portrait ……. AND CAKE SMASH!!

The Prevettes are lifers with us… at least so far and we hope for the next 30 years. We photographed Lindsay and Seth Prevette’s wedding in 2008 and later their first born, daughter Macanna, as well as son Walker as a new born. This session, however, is in celebration of Walker’s first birthday, so we invited them to the Pixels’ studio and outdoor portrait garden in August of this year.

Remember when you were so small that your parents could fit your bum into a baseball glove? He won’t either, but he’s so stinking cute and now there’s proof of it. Walker’s newborn portraits were delicious because he was and at 1 year, he still is. The love of baseball was a major theme in both sessions.
I look at the newborn photo below and those fingers especially and wonder if he’s dreaming about music and thinking, “I’m playing guitar. I’m the band’s Front Man….  making brilliant chord changes that no one saw coming.”
BUT. Walker may be scratching his chest and trying to decide between throwing a slider, a cutter or a change-up and hoping to impress some cute girl sitting in the stands just behind home plate.

Walker’s mom, Lindsey is very laid back. She makes appointments for portraits and always says “just do what you do best and I know I’ll love it.” That kind of confidence and faith is humbling, so we pull out the stops. Lindsay mentioned that she loved the red wagon because it reminded her of her own childhood, and we definitely love props with kids; they help distract and promote creativity at the same time.
Unfortunately, nostalgia about wagons and creative props do not stave off fussiness with toddlers and after Walker got tired of posing for photos, he decided to give us the “You’ve Got to Be Kidding Me” speech in his own made up language that consisted of pulling faces, tears, and some squawking.
And then [harp music] the clouds parted.
And there was cake.
CAKE!
Beautiful, perfect, resplendent, decadent cake.
SWEET SUSTAINER OF LIFE!!!!!
After that I think we could have left him alone with it and he would not have missed us.

Pixels On Paper Willkesboro NC Child Portrait Photographers One Year Cake Smash PhotoPixels On Paper Willkesboro NC Child Portrait Photographers One Year Cake Smash PhotoThere were claw marks in the cake for sure, but Walker managed to limit the smearing to his cheeks, mouth, nose, chest, hands, knees, legs and feet. Success.
