You can look at a couple and sort of see when they’re at the beginning of a relationship, of their journey together, or the beginning of something big. I love this scene from The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. He’s been daydreaming in hyper-drive about her, obsessing about what “they” might be and FINALLY – at the end (it’s a movie, folks, you know how it works), they begin what might be an actual love affair.
So, now you’re engaged! Tell us how it happened. Flash mob dancing to or singing your favorite song? A video journal with all the memories leading up to falling in love? Scavenger hunt? Did you order a pizza and just decide “let’s do this!?” Regardless: congratulations! You’re at the beginning and this is where we come in as seasoned husband and wife and experienced engagement and wedding photographers. Whether they are indoor portraits or outdoor shots at your favorite spot, we know how to capture the beginning of your life together, tell your story and make it fun.
AND! Engagement portrait sessions are complimentary in most of our wedding photography packages.
We take engagement portraits pretty much anywhere and everywhere our clients ask us to and so far we haven’t had any request too audacious. We always ask couples to think about a place that means something to them and we’ll make it work. There’s something about your first official portraits together as a To Be Married pair, so we want you to be relaxed, excited (you can do both!) and let us handle the results. Engagement portraits are a way for us to get to know our wedding clients better. We get to learn about you, see how comfortable you are in front of the camera and help you increase your comfort level before the wedding day. It’s great practice in posing, and figuring out if you can be candid in front of the camera without our guidance or if you need a little coaching. We’re on YOUR team, so we love the engagement session because it’s an opportunity to create a level of familiarity and comfort.
As you plan your big day, don’t forget the engagement portraits can be dressy or casual and given as gifts, put on your wedding website or save the date cards or just sent out to friends via social media. Whatever you decide though, these shots are important and you’ll never regret having them made.
We were also the wedding photographers for each of these couples above and hundreds of others. If you’re looking for photographers for your engagement portraits and wedding day in 2017, it’s not too soon to start planning and booking. I know…. it’s the second week of January, but you’ll be glad you did. Contact us and let’s get started.
We love family portraits whether they are set in the studio, the great outdoors, a specific location like the mountains or high country, or on our property in our outdoor portrait garden. Pixels on Paper photographs, engagements and weddings, brides, and special events and portraits of all kinds in our Wilkesboro, NC studio. We would be honored to meet with you, learn about you and your family and be a part of taking special portraits that will become, we hope, family heirlooms.
Kendra and Nathan love The Avett Brothers, wine, wineries and each other. The end.
Ok, there’s more to them than just that. We met Kendra at a bridal show this past March and loved chatting with her and hearing about her engagement to Nathan. They met in high school and began dating when he left for college at ASU. Before long, he was coming home A LOT and they became inseparable and still are. These two love to go to NC wineries when they have down time and they knew that a vineyard would be perfect spot to photograph their engagement session. On November 4th, we all met at Piccione Vineyards, armed with a blanket, our equipment, and sunshine and proceeded to wander among the vines.
The Piccione Vineyard boasts amazing views of the rolling landscape of the Yadkin Valley and NC mountains in the distance and they didn’t disappoint us that day. Watching these two crack up was especially fun. Kendra mentioned that Nathan ribs her mercilessly and said that she “usually deserves it.” The couple will be getting married at The Barn at Blueberry Hill on May 20th of 2017 and we’re looking forward to the day, the ceremony and watching them make it official. We really like this couple and seeing them with the expanse of vineyards behind them is metaphor enough for us. Here’s to lifting a glass and toasting years and acres of laughter, teasing, harmony, prosperity and many good vintages.

We met Christine at the wedding of her friends, Lauren and Patrick in 2014. This girl is a referral machine. We’ve not only booked more weddings because of her recommendations, but when she got engaged herself, she called us. We chatted with the pair at yet another wedding (no, they are not professional wedding goers!) and they were musing about potential engagement photos spots. We told them what we always tell couples: choose a location that’s meaningful to you so that in years to come you can look back at the photos and recognize the setting for its significance. That was when a lightbulb appeared over Adam’s head.
We took advantage of as many angles and options as possible and loved doing so with the couple and their sweet dog Kensie. These 2 will make it official (if you didn’t look closely at the photo above), October 22 of this year in Charlotte and we’ll be there to capture the next set of family memories and history. Counting the days!

There were years (in the many hundreds) when people married young. Maybe your parents, grandparents or great-grandparents did. No one thought anything about it and I’m not prepared to give a history lesson about why it worked or didn’t. Young brides and grooms, older brides and grooms…. we ALWAYS cheer for a strong marriage that lasts until Al Roker is talking about it on the Today Show.
These 2 below, Violet and Floyd, were married for 67 years. They were married young, were 21 and 22 in this photo, and in 2015, they passed away holding hands with their hospice beds pushed together. 67 years and together right until the last moment.
Who knows why some young marriages work and last, producing thriving families, smartypants kids, and reels and reels of memories? But they do. When we hear, “but they’re SO YOUNG,” as we have in our tenure as wedding photographers, we think, “but what if what they have is the big “IT?” We believe Ashley & Oscar have it. They are young, yes, but they have the depth, gravitas, self-awareness and sense of longevity – and they displayed it during our photo session.
They have “it” and IT is a shared belief in Christ and each other.
Ashley and Oscar met when her church took a trip to Mexico. When Oscar returned to school in the states, they started spending more time together and realized their similar dreams and feelings. Ryan and I have known them for a while. Oscar and Ashley’s brother Daniel were models for us during a prom shoot a few years ago. The Caudill’s have supported Pixels On Paper Photography and we’ve always appreciated their love and care for us. Now we get to return the favor as documentarians and friends.
I’ve never been around a couple, even twice their age, who were more grounded in faith, family and tradition. Ashley will finish the last of both her high school and college courses in December and then they will be married in NC. A honeymoon in Mexico is planned and Ashley will finally be able to meet all of Oscar’s family. We’re excited about the stories to come of how these families will blend into one and write their own new story with Him at the center. We couldn’t be more hopeful or proud or happy for them.

It has been a year. A whole, big, replete, exhausting, fun, “where are my keys”, “doesn’t she look amazing?”, “I can’t believe we survived”, “oh holy moly, that was the best!!” year since our 10th anniversary in business as Pixels on Paper.
The calendar tells us that there is a beginning of every new year and it’s January 1. But the thing is…. your birthday, your anniversary is the beginning of YOUR new year and Pixels On Paper was birthed in June of 2005. It’s our birthday. It’s Pixels On Paper’s 11th anniversary. We did it – AGAIN!
During the last 12 months, we’ve photographed siblings holding onto each other. We focused our lenses on businesses we love, vendors we collaborate with and admire, taken post-wedding photos with mountains in the distance….. families gathered and smiling… orchards in bloom, brides lit with joy, new husbands unable to stop grinning, kids racing around and babies, babies, babies. We have loved every single minute.
We also got to send some love to locations where we shoot weddings and events. The Holiday Inn City Center in Charlotte, Leatherwood Resort and Winding Creek Wedding Barn are merely 3.
It was our second year as official photographers for Merlefest. We were completely rested about a month later.
WE LOVE THAT GIG.
And we captured loads of babies…. some were reaching out for “kid-dom” but they’re still babies.
Here’s to the next 12 months, the coming autumn (2 weeks away) and holidays and thanks to you all for an amazing year.
