My guess is that almost everyone reading this has seen photos like these framed or in shadow boxes at your parents or grandparents homes. Maybe your clan is ultra modern, but many of us have seen our progenitors in some sort of tintype or daguerreotype from over a century (or two) ago and wondered about their story, how they found each other, what they loved about each other, IF they loved each other and what kind of lives they lived. It feels like a leap to go from the couple above to Timothy Mahon and Katie Speights at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville in 2016, where we shot their engagement portraits, but their great-great grandchildren won’t find it weird at all.
The two above decorated pumpkins on the groom’s family farm, marking how they found each other, living as neighbors who never met for a decade. The two below LOVE Dr. Who and that character made appearances in their engagement photo gear and later at their wedding. Those are the kind of details we’re interested in when we photograph engaged couples: “What make you YOU?!” “What would you want those family members you’ll perhaps never meet to know about your love story?”
While these photos are not sepia or tintype and the couples are wearing 21st century clothes, each photo tells a story and the people who know them, love them and have yet to meet them generations to come, will cherish these. Don’t think, dear reader, that shots from your smart phone will do – or even last – the way that portraits taken to mark your engagement will. These are the heirlooms that hold families together for decades and for centuries.

If you’re like many of the couples we’ve heard from over just the last couple of weeks, you’re jazzed about both the holiday that’s licking our heels and the new year to come because YOU’RE NEWLY ENGAGED. Congratulations!! If you’re in the afterglow of realization that you’re starting a new chapter, enjoy it! And when you’re ready to put away the last string of garland and haul in your 2018 desk blotter calendar, call us for your engagement portraits. It’s one item we can help take care of on your list.
We’ve been photographing couples, brides and weddings for over 13 years and it’s different every time. Year to year, new faces, new ideas for locations, new dynamics and amazing new stories. We always ask couples for their back story so that we can get to know you and more about who you are, what makes you a couple and what you’re looking forward to about your wedding day. It’s also a chance for us to help you relax during the shoot, figure out details you might have questions about and help make the day fun and the images memorable. Engagement portraits are heirlooms. We look forward to creating yours!
The time it takes to get everything planned shouldn’t overwhelm you, but it can. Contact us and we’ll start the conversation and planning to help insure your story and engagement photos are everything you want them to be. Looking forward to meeting you!

“We’re pretty much obsessed with each other,” they told us and I personally consider that a good sign if you’re going to marry someone.
These two lovebirds are a couple we adore. We’ve known them for a while due to the fact that we photographed groom-to-be Preston Roberts’ sister Meghann for her bridal portraits and stunning wedding. The family adopted us and WE LET THEM! We love, love, love this family and feel like we belong. So when Madison Ball and Preston became engaged, Madi booked us before she even knew the date of their wedding. Both teachers, Madi and Preston are recent college grads – she from UNC-Charlotte and he from Appalachian – and they fell in love beginning with a funny Instagram message that led to a series of texted videos of Preston playing the guitar and singing for her. That was 2 years ago. Since then, they’ve been living 2 hours apart, so when they’re together, they love to float on the river, duck hunt in Arkansas, go to App football games or to the beach and just crack each other up. These two are fun and funny, so we don’t have any trouble believing they enjoy time together and are going to have a successful marriage filled with lots of laughter.Photographing Madi and Preston in various beauty spots around West Jefferson NC in the mountains of the High Country was a breeze because it was so completely relaxed and gave us a chance between set-ups to catch up on life and family. The couple will be married in July on the family farm, the same place we photographed Preston’s sister’s bridal portraits. They have no plans for establishing any new traditions at their ceremony they say, but they are excited about first seeing each other when Madi walks down the proverbial aisle at their intimate wedding. We look forward to their mid-summer wedding and to seeing the family again and watching these two call it legal. Let the countdown begin and congrats on the journey ahead, you guys!

There is a rush to this whole getting married thing.
I know, “newsflash,” but I’m going somewhere with this, so stick with me:
Naturally, there is the race to get everything planned, booked, selected, purchased and pulled together. Even if you’re not on a strict timetable, there is still a sense of urgency about making the right choices and not missing any detail that might make your wedding more memorable. That’s not the rush I’m talking about though. I’m thinking of the rush of actually realizing that you’ve done it. Do you see it? See what I’m talking about? Some of it is the group celebration, but it’s also that first look and exhaled “phew!” between husband and wife that we love to capture. Those are often some of our favorite shots (and our clients’ faves as well) …. seeing the anticipation and then afterwards, when the officiant announces that two are now one. There is still so much energy in the space, but it’s new energy. It’s an absolute rush.
You cannot get to that moment though if you haven’t booked your wedding photographers and we would love to be a part of your team that day. Most of our wedding package includes a free engagement portrait session, allowing us to get to know you and help you to get comfortable in front of the camera if you aren’t already. We’re now booking weddings for 2017, 2018 and beyond. Contact us and let’s start planning.
