Spring Portraits – Milestones
I recently went on about spring portrait sessions and how many we are asked to schedule as the temperatures rise. This is a favorite season of ours. Today, I want to share the fun of photographing milestones that happened to have occurred around spring for some of our clients: most particularly children’s 6-month or first year portraits and spring weddings.
Outdoor Weddings
The first day of spring is March 20th, and we’re ready. If you have a milestone coming up – of any sort – and want to capture it this season, contact us!
We love family portraits whether they are set in the studio, the great outdoors, a specific location like the mountains or high country, or on our property in our outdoor portrait garden. Pixels on Paper photographs, engagements and weddings, brides, and special events and portraits of all kinds in our Wilkesboro, NC studio. We would be honored to meet with you, learn about you and your family and be a part of taking special portraits that will become, we hope, family heirlooms.

All Hail Spring
All hail Spring!
Believe me I know that sounds sarcastic – and it might be just a little. We set our clocks forward over the weekend, Mardi Gras and Ash Wednesday were just celebrated and very recently “the Spring temps” were as low as 16 degrees for a string of nights. I’m ready for spring. How about you guys?
For Ryan and me, spring means being outside for all kinds of outdoor portrait sessions. It’s an all-inclusive season, if you know what I mean. There is just one reason to have portraits taken this season, there are dozens. Here are just a sampling:
Outdoor “just because”
Bridal portraits al fresco
Spring just draws us out when it arrives and we have so many beautiful places to shoot images of children, families, engaged couples, brides and prom-goers.
Prom
Engagement
Families
Open your windows, sweep off the deck (YES, you may need to be wearing a windbreaker…. just do it!), prepare to store the boots and pull out flip flops (or my favorite Chacos), shelve the flannel sheets for soft cotton, and get ready for spring. And while you’re doing that, consider who in your life would love an outdoor portrait of you? Who would you love to have a spring or summer photo session with and give them a call. What event is coming up that could be made better with a portrait?
A couple of hints:
– Easter (April 21)
– Proms
– Senior Year/Graduation – elementary, high school, college – (May)
– Mother’s Day (May 12)
– Father’s Day (June 16)
– Family reunions
These types of portraits never disappoint.
I’ll save the milestones of baby firsts and wedding outdoors for next time!

Pixels Creates Updated Branding for Local Bakery – Indulge
Just as when your life changes, when your business changes, it’s time for a new look… and in the world of marketing, we call that rebranding. Pixels is asked to help businesses rebrand with new logo treatments and visual vocabularies all the time, but it’s particularly fun when it’s someone you know and respect. Enter Haylee Greene.
Haylee is a baker and the owner of Indulge Specialty Cakes & Baked Goods. We created her original branded logo, and businesses cards too, back in 2015. We had a blast because 1) she’s a dynamo and has been such a wonderful friend, and 2) we happen to have in common the fact that Indulge and Pixels are specialty vendors who work events like weddings. In other words, we often run in the same circles.
Haylee stepped away from the baking business for a season (and got married!) and when she decided to come back to the business, she wanted a refresh and we were happy to help.
Original business card and logo for Indulge Bakery designed in 2015:
As we do with all branding clients, we started with a conversation about what she wanted from the logo in this new world and asked for inspiration and examples of what she found attractive. Haylee shared a desire for something more earthy in terms of palette and more handmade – even hand-drawn in look and feel (like her gorgeous baked creations) and provided us with some parameters. It was an overhaul and we enjoyed the challenge of making the look different, but still indicative of who she is, what her business does and appealing to the eye.
Her response from the first round of logos: “You have outdone yourself!! Honestly, I don’t know how I’m going to choose! You definitely nailed exactly what my vision was.”
First round of concepts for the updated Indulge Specialty Cakes & Baked Goods:
After some tweaking, we sent along a second set and she reviewed those as well. When she found the winner, she wrote us to say, “Thank you for working so hard. It seems even more important to me this time for many reasons. I love that you are so willing to help me make it perfect.”
Final logo design for Indulge Specialty Cakes & Baked Goods:
Rebranded final business card design for Indulge:
The business card design was just as fun and gave Ryan the chance to throw out some wild card ideas to see where Haylee was with thoughts on taking the branding beyond the logo. In the end, she opted for a mix of traditional and earthy, which suits Haylee as a person and how she wants to market the business.
[By the way, and not for nothing, Haylee and Indulge make crazy good cakes and cupcakes, plus AH-MAZING whoopee pies!!]

Wedding Expo March 10, 2019
It’s that time, brides-to-be. The Wilkes Wedding Expo 2019 is Sunday, March 10th at The John A. Walker Center at Wilkes Community College. From 1 – 4 pm, wedding professionals from multiple industries will be available to show you what they do well and answer any questions you may have. Ryan and I will be there again this year and hope that you will look for the Pixels on Paper booth. We’re already getting excited to see familiar faces and meet new clients.
While our booth is a bit different every year, our aim is always the same: to share our love for photography and our clients and provide as much insight and information as we can. Whether your wedding is an indoor church affair or outside with a mountain view behind you, we’ve done it many times before. The difference is YOU and we’re anxious to see what you have in mind and how best to capture your big day. Formal or informal, we’ve been at this for nearly 15 years and love to shoot engagement, bridals and the weddings themselves. We usually end up being asked to photograph all of these once we get to know a couple. We’re pretty friendly. 🙂
We are not only long-time and dear friends of Kelly Shumate, owner extraordinaire of Bridal Traditions – the organizer of this annual event – we are often asked to be the photographers for the event. It’s always fun to see what brides are hoping for each year – what’s trendy, what old traditions are making their way back, ways to celebrate, save and have a memorable wedding day. And we love meeting fellow professionals in this biz.
If you haven’t planned to go, make it a point to get your tickets, grab your pals and join us. If you have, be on the look-out for Pixels on Paper. We look forward to meeting you.
