Hannah Leigh Harrison was born July 10th to beaming parents Jamie & Daniel Harrison. These are beloved friends and clients of ours for years. We photographed Jamie & Daniel’s engagement portraits and then their October 2015 wedding. Along with Daniel’s son Henry now there are four of them, since adding their favorite new palindrome Hannah. The couple took us up on the offer we make to all of our wedding clients for free newborn photographs if and when they begin their family. We usually photograph newborns within the first 10 days of their lives, because that’s the window for getting those sleepy, curled up and cozy photos. It’s important though to make exceptions for babies delivered via C-section, so we invited the family to our studio on the 26th and it was still a wonderful and successful shoot. Hannah did not disappoint.
Before Hannah’s arrival we were planning for the shoot. Jamie & Daniel sent me photos of her nursery and various areas in their home where they wanted to hang photos. I found out her nursery colors and also that Jamie’s favorite color is purple. I then used those details and photos to plan the backdrop, gather props, wraps and headbands that Hannah would wear. With this preparation I was able to compose photos and design wall art that will coordinate with the family’s home and proportionally fill some of the bare walls. We love providing this service and our families/clients do too.

There is love and there’s love and then there’s the Minick family. You can say the name Minick and my heart fills up. We have the best history with this family and our love for them runs deep. We’ve photographed just about every milestone of their adult lives. On May 17th, Matthew (“Matt Matt”) celebrated his first birthday and we photographed his celebratory portrait session 10 days after. We decided to make this session a family affair and snagged some photos with parents Rachel & Ryan and with his big sis Amelia.
We’ve been photographing the Minicks for so long, including their engagement and wedding, Christmas photos, maternity and Amelia’s one year portraits and Matthew’s newborn portraits. They are absolutely family. Matthew had a Little Blue Truck themed birthday party and photo shoot as well. We love seeing these kids and family grow and especially watching the little ones develop their own personalities. No two are alike!
Rachel, Ryan, Amelia and Matthew: we love you to pieces. We love how open you are in your lives, how you invite us in to share and how your amazing family is growing in size and in love. We look forward to the next milestone and another chance to hang out and do life.
In my recent blog about summer photos, I mentioned that you don’t have to be getting married to plan a photo session with us during this gorgeous time of year. Although….. look at these two below. Pretty fab standing in the Church of Mother Nature. Potential outdoor shots are practically everywhere.
The Blue Ridge Parkway, The Biltmore House and Grove Park Inn in Asheville, The Piccione Vineyards in Ronda, NC, trails and fields in Blowing Rock, your own family property, camps and cabins, and any number of beaches in North or South Carolina, state parks or favorite neighborhood recreational spots make perfect destinations for a photo shoot. Our own portrait garden at the Pixels Studio is often the best option for those who want a beautiful outdoor shot but cannot travel too far. And honestly, we have more than a few clients who DO make a long drive to us BECAUSE they love our gardens and the relaxed feeling of the place.
Contact us about your summer adventure and if you’d like to commemorate it with photos!
We love family portraits whether they are set in the studio, the great outdoors, a specific location like the mountains or high country, or on our property in our outdoor portrait garden. Pixels on Paper photographs, engagements and weddings, brides, and special events and portraits of all kinds in our Wilkesboro, NC studio. We would be honored to meet with you, learn about you and your family and be a part of taking special portraits that will become, we hope, family heirlooms.
No matter what it looks like, motherhood is profound. Mothers declare – with this first amazing act of carrying a child and then giving birth to it – that they will forever share their food, put their immediate needs aside, hold their child’s head above the rising water, look for sacred lost things, and provide comfort, perspective, structure, laughter, physical and emotional affection, joy and support till the very end.
Now I love jumping jacks and cartwheels as much as the next girl. Ask anybody. Actually don’t ask anybody. But I don’t mind pulling out all the stops to get a kid to grin. We would love to tell you that when we walk into a room with our equipment or welcome kids into our portrait studio, children light up with joy. With glee and with abandon.
And sometimes they do. Please see exhibit A – Sawyer Jane below.
But Sawyer Jane was brand new (weeks old) and had just won a scholarship.
And been tickled.
And was probably pooping.
Flynn is, not surprisingly, an entirely different creature. Different parents, different gender, different stylists, teachers and chefs cater to him. And as handsome as he is, and handsome as he was as a newborn, the day of his one year photo shoot, he had been reading the Times, the Post, blog trolls and watching cable news and decided to be in a serious mood. His parents are clients of ours and we photographed Kathren & Nathan Lundy’s engagement and their wedding several years ago, as well as Flynn’s newborn pictures.
You can’t always win kids over and we pulled more than a few tricks out of our hats with sweet Flynn: songs, toys, videos, silly faces, dancing; you name it we tried it. He was mild and contemplative – and extremely cute – but there was no raucous laughter. To be honest, I love the individuality we see. Adults are this way, why can’t kids be?
Close to the end of our session, when we had almost caved to his seriousness and I began to run – literally – around inside the studio, yelling loudly, hiding behind a giant soft box in our own version of peep eye did he finally crack a little. Flynn’s a little statesman, although when we see him next, he may be on the short list for head writer at SNL.
I love that Kathren and Nathan were delighted to find we had captured more than one or two photos from his session. And always it’s awesome to witness and capture the changes in the lives of those we first met as engaged couples.
Serious or not, we love you, Flynn.
