We recently got a call from a photography client and friend with some news and a request. Daniel Caudill shared that his grandfather’s health had changed and he wanted to make sure that there were family photos of ALL of them together – from his grandparents down to great-grandchildren. 2020 has made social distancing a priority, but families still need to see each other, feel some normalcy and spend time together, so Ryan took off to their family home to take pictures.
Even though the weather was warm, everyone gathered to see the matriarch and patriarch of the family, play in the yard, and catch up. Ryan told me he orbited around the groups between setups, teasing the kids, talking to the adults and reminiscing about times Pixels has photographed this tribe. We think this makes 10 times we’ve been honored to photograph these folks.
When the heat became too much, everyone went inside where they told stories and Ryan said he felt like a member of the family and was treated as such. They sat for a long time, laughing and relishing each others company. Being able to do this is extremely special for us and one of the reasons we love our jobs so much.
We captured Daniel and Sarah (below, back row, on the right) in photo shoots for their engagement, wedding, post-wedding time at Faithfest and then later took Daniel’s professional head shots when he became a realtor. Getting his call sent us into action, of course. We love all these guys so much.
Ashley and Oscar Orozco (below, top left with grandparents and their two children) have been beloved clients of ours for a while too and they are also part of the Caudill clan. We photographed their engagement portraits, their wedding, newborn portraits of daughter Anna Sophia, and their first born Leo’s portraits. We even spent time in our favorite orchard for a springtime family portrait session.
We are not promised tomorrow, but we can be grateful today. We are thinking of this amazing family today and everyday and are so glad we were able to take a collection of family portraits that each member can hold dear for decades to come.
We love family portraits whether they are set in the studio, the great outdoors, a specific location like the mountains or high country, or on our property in our outdoor portrait garden. We’ve made it to Labor Day during a global pandemic. Somehow, someway, here we are. I am grateful and I am ready for fall. We hope you all are taking care of yourselves as kids return to whatever version of school is on deck for them. Now: it’s time to talk about fall portraits of your family, your children and even the holidays.
We are booking outdoor photography sessions for September, October and onward right now, so if you’re eager to get your holiday card done and ready to print and mail, contact us.

I’m not calling it. Summer is NOT over. Say whatever you want about the leaves, the temps, Labor Day Weekend, school in session, etc, but I’m not ready. The end is near to be sure, but can’t we just enjoy the best of the outdoors in summer?
Really? Can we? EXCELLENT!
Family portraits, engagement portraits, sessions with and without dogs, with or without a theme or narrative, we are ready. We love being outside with our clients.
Fall is coming. I know, I know. More about that in our next blog. In the meantime, take advantage of the weeks ahead and then get out your calendars.

It’s been said that a sibling is the only enemy you cannot live without. I’d like to think that I would use the case-by-case method instead of thinking that this is true across the board.
While musing recently about a possible influx of babies due to being quarantined in 2020, I reviewed so many images of children, of kids being kids, of the demure, the knuckleheads tamping down their laughter while I was shooting images, and of little cherubs (sorta) …. brothers and sisters, friends, conspirators, frenemies, … siblings.
A favorite line about siblings someone recently shared with me: They are children of the same parents, each of whom is perfectly normal until they get together. I love this and it prompted me to find other summaries and observations about siblings.
”The advantage of growing up with siblings is that you become very good at fractions.” – Robert Brault
“Half the time when brothers wrestle, it’s just an excuse to hug each other.” – James Patterson
“They say that no matter how old you become, when you are with your siblings, you revert back to childhood.” – Karen White
“A sibling is the lens through which you see your childhood.” – Ann Hood
“To the outside world, we all grow old. But not to brothers and sisters. We know each other as we always were, we know each other’s hearts, we share private family jokes. We remember family feuds and secrets, family griefs and joys.” – Clara Ortega
I would like to add (as an only child) that cousins deserve to be included in this mix too. Those relationships that build and shape us are just the best.
Take the opportunity to have those relationships photographed.

This is officially an invitation to come out and play.
We’re booking socially responsible (read: socially distanced/no contact) summer portraits out of doors. North Carolina is gorgeous this time of year. It’s actually gorgeous all year, but families are getting out to play in local parks, on the Blue Ridge Parkway, at vacation rentals, on the water and in the woods. You should let us photograph some of those memories.
Have a family gathering or family day trip planned that you would like photographed, get in touch with us and let’s get outside!
