Recently we were hired by good friend and fellow wedding aficionado, Kelly of BeYOUtiful Prom Boutique at Bridal Traditions to take some commercial fashion photos for her. We go way back with Kelly and with her amazing business, so we were jazzed to jump in and do our part to help her as she prepares her marketing materials for 2018’s prom season. We photographed model and real junior-prom attendee Stacie Shumate in her actual prom gown purchased from BeYOUtiful Prom. The fashion shoot took place in our outdoor portrait garden at the Pixels’ studio in Wilkesboro. We photographed Stacie’s portraits just three short years ago in the peach orchards and can’t believe how much she has changed in such a short time. It was a pleasure and a treat! Thanks for letting us be a part of your business and life and for letting us watch you grow Stacie. We love family portraits whether they are set in the studio, the great outdoors, a specific location like the mountains or high country, or on our property in our outdoor portrait garden. Pixels on Paper photographs, engagements and weddings, brides, and special events and portraits of all kinds in our Wilkesboro, NC studio. We would be honored to meet with you, learn about you and your family and be a part of taking special portraits that will become, we hope, family heirlooms.

One of the joys – and believe me there are many – of being a photographer is seeing something happen with a client that you had no idea about. Do you follow? Sometimes, you’re taking family photos of a couple with their first child and discover later that the second is on the way. Or a family has gathered at a reunion and later, when a beloved member has passed, we all realize that the photos were the last. Time moves.
This is not that story though. This is business and a wonderful one at that. We photographed Ashley and Oscar’s wedding last year and fell in love with them and their story. Now, Ashley has created Orozco’s Christian Craft Shop and you can find them and Ashley’s amazing specialty work on Facebook.

This project was a personal one and we felt so privileged to be included in the promotion of Colt’s Hearts of Comfort. Parents Shana Greene Williams is a life-long family friend of mine and when she and her husband Thomas lost their son Colt at 38 1/2 weeks, only a few days before his birth, they were naturally devastated, confused, angry and left wondering “why?” These two Christ-followers, however, did not lean on their own understanding, but built on their grief. From the loss of Colt, they created a special non-profit to help others. It honors their son, allows him to have a legacy in death that he couldn’t have in life, and it provides comfort and support to families who’ve lost a child.
Shana reached out to us as the non-profit began to grow, because she knew there were families out there, like hers, who would need comfort when the unimaginable happens. The world keeps turning, but your heart is broken. She felt that hospitals, OB/GYN offices and others doctors, churches and organizations might need a brochure to give to those families. Children who are still-born or those who are miscarried are no less precious to the families who wanted and planned for them. Even with medical advances, there is still loss during pregnancy and the Williams’ knew this.
Ryan worked closely with Shana, discussed what she would need in a marketing piece, and designed a trifold brochure for the cause (the graphics above). He also designed a folded note card to accompany each pillow sent to families (the images below). Being a part of creating any kind of promotion for this group that understands loss, prays over each pillow and is reaching parents and families in a dark hour was an honor for us. The idea seems simple, but when you hold one of these pillows – that weighs roughly what the lost child weighed – you understand how important this project is.
We all want to think that we can “dig deep” when tragedy touches our lives. I believe that in Shana and Thomas you can see true faith in action. When we are small, the Lord looms large as our father, our comfort, and our example to others. We are weak and He is strong. He teaches us to lean on Him, and as we receive His comfort, we also receive an example of how to comfort others.

The collaboration between Chetola Recreation Sporting Reserve and the Blue Ridge Mountain Club is a smart and fairly seamless one. “On 67 acres of rural rolling terrain, among towering pines, red maples, and mighty oaks, and surrounded by the incredible Blue Ridge vistas in the heart of the gated Blue Ridge Mountain Club, lies Chetola Sporting Reserve. The private club, open exclusively to those with annual memberships or lodging guests at Chetola Resort, features an array of outdoor sportsman activities including gun, rifle and pistol ranges, sporting clay course, 5-stand clay station, archery range, and fly fishing. All activities are led by NRA-certified instructors specialized in a particular discipline, with customized Churchill-style instruction based on each guest’s proficiencies and needs.”
What Ryan and I saw was the usual amazing work from the minds at MBI Builders. It is an absolutely gorgeous timber frame lodge for the members and guests of the Resort and Club to enjoy and perfectly situated with beautiful views and area to practice your marksmanship.

A few weeks ago, we photographed another custom built home by MBI Builders LLC at the Blue Ridge Mountain Club in Blowing Rock NC. Talk about a gorgeous place ready to be filled with memories and stories…! This home has epic views out most of the windows (the views in our images look fake, but I promise you, they aren’t), and we had an “ordered from a catalog” day to shoot. This house is situated perfectly on the lot and depending on the room you’re in, you can feel like you’re in the treetops.
Some unique aspects are not only the views, though. The craftsman style wood work and custom cabinetry are perfectly hewn. All of the counter tops and inlays in the bathrooms and showers are made from concrete and custom created by MBI. Wood, concreate, and panorama surround you in every direction. All of the elements seemed to have voices of their own.The kitchen counter tops look like a blend of earth and sky, something you can see out any of the windows, and each room invites both a call to dream about adventure as well as a desire for comfort and rest. Once again, MBI knocked the cover off the ball and we loved being able to capture key images for their brand, their portfolio and the homeowners who will move into this wonderful space.
